Transcript of FASHION DESIGN
NATURE OF WORK
Fashion designers create new fashion styles and reinvent old ones by designing different types of clothing.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
WORK EXPERIENCE/ VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES/ EXTERNAL COURSES
There are many reasons for why I want to do this job. First of all, I believe there is a big difference between "love for clothing" and "love for fashion". Fashion Design mainly involves having your own creative ideas about designs and styles, as well as making and handling textiles and clothing. I already have the hands-on skills of making and handling clothing and plan on further learning more about designing patterns and garments. Design is something that I enjoy very much, and I want to do this job because it is something I am passionate about.
Must have technical knowledge as well as an eye for trends.
Produce detailed drawings of their ideas.
Make precise calculations to determine the amount of material needed to create their designs.
Sketch rough and detailed drawings of their ideas, and write notes on specific requirements.
Sense of style is essential.
Most designers work closely with businesspeople, marketers, salespeople, and individual clients to produce clothes that suit the current trends rather than just their own personal tastes.
This requires a lot of research, so designers attend fashion shows and read fashion magazines and websites to determine what the most popular styles are.
Designers take this research and the needs of the company or client into consideration when they begin creating the designs.
Once the design is finalized, it is time to begin creating the actual garment.
Next, designers use a model to examine the garment in order to check the look and fit, and see if any final adjustments are necessary.
Once the final garment is complete, the designer shows it to the client or company.
Fashion designers typically work 9 to 10 hours a day.
Weekend work is common, especially when seasonal deadlines are approaching.
The fashion world can be stressful, with designers working under strict deadlines and against stiff competition.
Earnings depend on their employer, level of experience, and reputation.
Most fashion designers earn somewhere between $20,000 and $80,000 a year.
Designers at the top of their profession can earn over $100,000 a year.
But those who are less well-known or just starting out in the field make much less.
The apparel industry, important because it is the fifth largest secondary industry in B.C., is changing to compete with global and domestic markets.
Fashion designers who are employed by a company on a full-time basis often receive benefits such as dental insurance, paid vacation, and paid sick days.
Even though there are no specific educational requirements for a career in fashion design, most designers have a degree, diploma, or certificate in fashion design or a related area.
Many fashion designers gain hands-on experience by training with experienced designers for a number of years.

Most fashion designers can count on having their jobs for the next 3 to 5 years.
But designers who work for small companies tend to have the most job security, since their contributions are usually essential to the companies they work for.
Magazines hire former designers to work as fashion writers and editors. Established designers may also do costume design and wardrobe styling for films, TV shows, and commercials.
This is a four-year program which prepares students for careers in the global apparel economy in fashion design, production, marketing and computer technology.
