Transcript of Personality Project: Sheldon Cooper

Leonard's Childhood/Education
Leonard grew up in New Jersey. He's the middle child of 3 kids (a younger brother and an older sister). His parents put him in advanced classes at a young age and also made him learn cello (as if he wasn't bullied enough). He graduated from Princeton University.
Leonard's role in the show
Leonard is the leader amongst the group of nerds. He is always seeking approval of others. He is the most sociable of the group.
Main Characters cont.
Sheldon Cooper is best friends and roommates with Leonard Hofstadter
Penny is Leonard's current fiancee. She has been his love interest since the first episode.
Raj and Howard are good friends and colleagues of Leonard.
Amy is the girlfriend of Sheldon and Bernadette is the wife of Howard.
Horney's Psychoanalytic Approach
Neuroticism- emotionally unstable, unreasonable fear, anxiety, tense, etc.
Compliant- need for affection and approval, the need to please others and be liked by them, the need for a partner, for someone who will take over one's life

This perfectly explains Leonard's constant need of approval from his coworkers and friends. He has always wanted to be with Penny or other girls he has dated because he longs to get approval and affection. Leonard uses his inhaler often when he gets nervous, such as when his current partner doesn't approve of something he does or did.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
The third level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs fixates on friendship, family, and sexual intimacy. Leonard has reached this level throughout the series. He has gained friends and has become more open to socializing thanks to Penny. It seems like he is trying to reach the fourth level, which focuses on self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, and respect by others.

The Big 5
5 traits that are universal and have biological origins
Leonard is high in the categories Conscientiousness and Neuroticism. Conscientiousness people tend to be mindful of details and are organized, which Leonard most definitely is! Leonard is neurotic because he insecurely tilts his head when he speaks nervously, and he avoids eye contact. When under great stress, his voice is elevated to a high-pitched whine or he gets sweaty.

2. This clip shows Leonard's mother giving "advise" because Leonard is feeling lonely.
