Thesis Statements or Controlling Idea
What is a controlling idea?
A controlling idea is the MAIN IDEA of your paper. This main idea gives your reader a hint about what your entire essay will be about.
Where do I write this controlling idea?
A controlling idea works best when it is written in your introduction. Remember, it helps tell your reader what your essay will be about, so it makes sense to put it at the beginning. Usually, a controlling idea is the
last sentence
of your introduction.
How do I write a controlling idea?
Begin by understanding the prompt.
Now, to answer the prompt and write the controlling idea.
WRITE
an essay explaining why hard work is necessary to be successful.
Put it all together now.
I will put together the claim with my supporting details to create my controlling idea:
Hard work is necessary for success in life because it helps you gain experience and learn responsibility.

READ
the following quote.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. ~Will Rogers

THINK
carefully about the following statement.
Success comes from hard work. If you are not willing to work for what you want, then you will probably never achieve it.

WRITE
an essay explaining why hard work is necessary to be successful.
The READ statement is usually a quote to help inspire your thinking.
Here the quote is by Will Rogers and states: "Even if you're on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there."
The THINK statement helps you understand the quote better. It can also help you begin to brainstorm for the main part of the prompt which is the WRITE statement.
The WRITE statement is what your essay should address. Make sure to read this statement carefully and answer all parts of the statement.
WRITE
an essay explaining why hard work is necessary to be successful.
Topic: Hard work
Claim: Hard work is necessary for success in life....
Supporting Details/Reasons: ....because it helps you gain experience and learn responsibility.
Make sure to UNDERSTAND the topic first.
The topic is found within the WRITE statement!
If you are not sure of your topic, go back and reread your prompt.
Once you understand the prompt, create a claim which makes a STANCE or says something important about the topic. In this case, the CLAIM is given to you. The CLAIM is that hard work helps to create success.
Finally, create the supporting details. These are the REASONS you believe your CLAIM to be true! This would be the most difficult part of creating your thesis because this is the part that requires YOUR THINKING and YOUR OPINION!
The body of your essay is shaped by your controlling idea. You would probably write two paragraphs in the body to explain how you gain experience and learn responsibility through hard work.
