Audio Engineering:
The Basics
Sound design (audio engineering) is made up of dialogue, sound effects, room tone, and background music. However, all of these elements are not always used.
Audio engineers who specialize in creating sound effects are known as Foley Artists.
Dialogue levels (volume) should always be higher than background music.
Sound quality is one of the most important aspects of filmmaking. While a poor image might pass with quality audio, even the best HD video will seem unprofessional with poor sound.
What is Post-Production?
Post-production refers to editing that is done in a computer after a film or video is recorded.

The editing process:
takes much longer than the recording process
allows the filmmakers to create a completely new reality for the viewer through careful choices
looks closely at the pacing (timing) of edits, creating an overall mood or tone that matches the action and dialogue of each scene
Persuasive Techniques

Appeals
Bandwagon Appeal - the desire to "belong" to a crowd
Snob Appeal - the desire to feel superior to others
Ethical Appeal - the mention of a widely-accepted value or claim (not based on hard science)
Appeal to Fear - suggests danger if the product is not purchased
Appeal to Pity - causes the viewer to feel compassion
Logical Fallacies
Either/Or Fallacy - causes the consumer to feel he/she is either FOR a cause or AGAINST it

False Analogy - a comparison is drawn between two things that may not be similar at all
Misrepresentations
Testimonial - a celebrity endorsement or a satisfied customer's recommendation

Transfer - connects the product with a positive ideal, image, or cause

Card Stacking - the misuse of scientific data and/or the complete misrepresentation of the actual product
Linguistic Appeals
Loaded Language - strong words are used to cause an emotional reaction in the viewer

Generalities/"Glad Words" - the use of important-sounding words with no real meaning; makes statements that cannot be proved OR disproved
Advertisers: those crazy kooks!
when the camera is positioned above a character ("high angle"), it makes him/her look smaller, weaker, and often means the character is doomed!
when the camera is positioned below a character ("low angle"), it typically means the character is powerful.
handheld camera work should only be used for artistic effect, such as a character's point of view, and even then, sparingly.
a camera passively observing a scene is known as an "objective angle," and a camera looking through the eyes of another character or point of view is known as a "subjective angle." both types of angles are commonly used in filmmaking.
Adding it all up...
Video production enables filmmakers and producers to create a complete experience for the viewer. With this in mind, it is important to consider what "reality television" actually is: hours of recorded footage, edited down to show the most outlandish behavior of the cast members, oftentimes portraying events completely out of order, and therefore constructing an entirely new story.

One must approach the fascinating process of film production with caution, and learn to view media messages (on television, the internet, and beyond) for the potentially deceptive vehicles they can be for a producer's agenda.

Media Literacy
Media Literacy is the ability to "read" media messages (such as video, music, print, and graphic design) for the deeper intentions of the media producers. This is much like Reading Literacy, wherein good readers are able to discover the attitudes, intentions, and messages crafted by authors in books and articles.

Not all media producers are deceptive, but it is important to develop our Media Literacy so that we can intercept potentially harmful messages and continue to develop our own opinions about the world around us.
