Start the Email with the Correct Greeting
If your teacher has told you what he or she wants to be called, then use that name.
Dear Dr. Mohammed,
Dear Mrs. Sarah,
Dear Ms. Amal,
Dear Mr. John,
If you are unsure what to call your teacher, then write a general greeting.
Do NOT start the Email with an Incorrect Greeting
Do not call a teacher by his or her first name unless they have said you may do so.
Do not start an email too informally. Be polite and show respect to your teacher.

Write the Email Message
Keep it short and get to the point quickly.
Your teacher has a lot of emails to read and does not have time to read a book-length email from every student.
Ask direct, specific questions.
Your teacher cannot read your mind. You need to be clear when you ask a question.
Do NOT Write Like This in the Email Message
Do not write in all capitalized letters.
IF YOU WRITE LIKE THIS, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE YELLING AT ME!
"YOU MARKED ME ABSENT."
Do not use multiple exclamation points or question marks. One is enough.
If you use multiple exclamation points, it sounds like you're yelling at me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"You marked me absent!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Do NOT Write Like This in the Email Message (Continued)
Do not write to your teacher the same way you write to your friends on the internet. This is not texting, Facebook, or Twitter.
Write proper sentences with subjects, verbs, correct punctuation, and correct spelling.

Do not tell your teacher that you weren't listening in class.

Ending the Email
End the email with a polite closing remark.
Always end the email with your full name.
Your teacher has a lot of students. He or she does not know who sent the email if you do not use your full name.
