2012- 23% ("School Uniform Statistics") 1. School uniforms will lower the
number of cases of bullying in schools.
2. In lower income families, uniforms
can be a good idea.
3. School uniforms will definitely help
students increase focus in class. 4. School Uniforms give children a
sense of unity and school representation.
5. It would allow students to get
ready for school faster in the morning.
6. Regular use of uniforms can help
to improve school safety support Opposition Opposition Opposition Opposition Call to action support Call to Action: Opposition Works Cited Violate students rights to freedom of expression
Family sued school: Daughter wore Tigger socks
2007 US supreme court case supported students wearing of an anti-gay T-shirt
1st amendment (Wilde)
Schools oppose and support diversity (Cruz 52). Band-Aid approach (Cruz 43)
Tinker vs. Moines Independent Community School District
Vietnam arm band

Parent argues:" There is no benefit to school uniforms, gangs wear uniforms"(Smith).
Invites rebellion (Mallet) What exactly is a school uniform? (Wilde) Schools are not focusing on the bigger picture. Argument: Improves school security
Opt-out clause
Few exceptions
Store bought- Easy to obtain
Intruders will blend Argument: Uniforms make students more equally social Poor or rich differentiated
Hair
Cleanliness
Demeanor
Judgments take place
Teasing/bullying won't stop
Uniform may be very unflattering on some- Increasing bullying (Nally) Argument: Uniforms improve school grades or academic achievement
No credible evidence that supports this claim (Mallet)
Notre Dame and Michigan State University conduct uniform academic relevance studies
Conclusion: No improvement of learning environment (Nally) Argument:- School uniforms increase expenses. More money is being spent on buying brand name clothes than it would be on uniforms. Students will just need to buy three or four uniforms than buying a bunch of brand name clothes that cost way more than uniforms. Argument:- Uniforms do not increase academic focus. Students would focus more on studies if they wouldn't have to worry about fashion. They wouldn't be focusing on showing off their brand name clothes and jewelery while in class. They would spend more time on studying rather than going to shop new fashion clothes and some students would even start saving money for college. My call to action is that all public schools should require uniforms to decrease the cases of bullying, parent's expenses on clothes and to increase academic focus of students. Eliminates some behavior problems
Easier to enforce
Safety
Sense of belonging; uniformity (Frazier) Wear appropriate clothing; behave
Write a letter to the principal
Speak at a council meeting
Show that your students do care Most importantly:
