Common Core Overview What are they?
How are they different?
What's the big deal? A set of standards for English Language Arts and Maths (Science available in draft form).

All standards are linked to college and career readiness standards. This makes the standards vertically articulate from K-12 (or Reception to Year 11).

Informed by top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and are evidence-based. What are they? Fewer standards (competencies) that drill deeper.

Clearer definitions of achievement.

Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through HIGH-ORDER SKILLS Fewer, Clearer, Higher Students, Teachers and Parents from
ACROSS OUR ACADEMY
"speak a common language"
COLLABORATION TOWARDS GRADUATION! Are they more suitable? Clearly organised and navigable (see organisation slide). Standards are "Core" conceptual understandings and procedures, thus allowing teachers to FOCUS and gain more DEPTH on important ideas. Built on existing AfL practice > Task based . CPD materials available for teachers (across 43 States). Organisation- ELA/ Literacy Each ELA section has Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Language Strands (Deep Literacy in our Themes tends to focus on writing). Each of the standards within an ELA strand corresponds to a College and Career Readiness Standard (Anchor Standards) College and Career Readiness Standards ELA The Maths standards are two-fold: Standards Content and Standards for Mathematical Practice Organisation-Maths Content standards are organised by Domain, Cluster and Standard. Anchor Standards for Mathematical Practice These Standards are not intended to be new names for old ways of doing business. They are CORE and other competencies should be woven into them.

They are a call to take the next step.

> A call for high standards across all subject areas.
> A call for ALL teachers to take responsibility for ELA and Maths

Above all, they are the foundations of a 21st Century Curriculum. So... So what would it look like? Language Arts Math Introduction: Where did they come from and Why? Science Social Studies Putting Literacy at the core of L4L. Download the Standards:

High School Math based on subject area- Algebra, Geometry, Statistics etc. From the research I've done, it seems that our pedagogical approach is more developed.

The Common Core Standards provide a clear map. Standards are cross-curricular (threads within strands).
Grades 6-12 have additional Reading and Writing standards for:
History & Social Science
Science & Technical Subjects Massachusetts > Common Core Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
