Cause 1: Treaties at Fort Laramie (1851) and Fort Atkinson (
Transcript of Cause 1: Treaties at Fort Laramie (1851) and Fort Atkinson (
Cause 1: Treaties at Fort Laramie (1851) and Fort Atkinson (1853) were signed by a number of Native tribes of the Plains.
Effect: After the treaty was signed, Americans still passed through the Native American reservations
This caused the relationships between the U.S. and the Native Americans to become poor
These events caused Native Americans to attack white settlers.
Cause 2: Large numbers of pioneers and settlers began to use the Bozeman Trail…
Effect: After Bozeman's parties were repeatedly attacked by the Sioux along the trail from 1862 to 1865, federal troops were assigned to guard it. On December 21, 1866, Chief Red Cloud led his allies in the Fetterman Massacre, in which eighty U.S. soldiers were killed at Fort Kearny. This defeat caused the United States to agree to a second treaty in 1868, which abandoned the Bozeman Trail to the Sioux and guaranteed Sioux lands in South Dakota.
Cause 3: Claims were made of a gold discovery in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory, land that belonged to the Sioux nation.
Made it where many people wanted to go there to find gold for themselves but it wasn't their land to do so.
Cause 4: Reservation police are sent to arrest the Sioux leader, Sitting Bull, in 1890 at the Standing Rock Reservation.
effect all the Indians. The police just had fear that he would try to takeover or something in that nature.
