Transcript of Coffee
By Ivana E.
Five Main Crops
Most of the coffee is grown in Southern Mexico
Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, and Veracruz produce about 90% of Mexico´s coffee
About 2 million farmers in Mexico grow it
The main types of corn they grow are yellow and white
Yellow corn can be used for livestock feed, starches, and corn syrup
White corn can be used for just eating and making tortillas
Mexico is one of the top 5 countries in corn production worldwide
Most popular beans grown: Pinto, Black, and Kidney
The amount of average beans produced yearly is 1.5 million tons
Beans are grown in every Mexican state
40% of Mexico´s total bean production is grown in Zacatecas
Mexico produces about 3 million tons of it annually
Mexico is the 20th in world production
Sonora, Baja California, Norte, Sinaloa, and Michoacan produce a lot of wheat; about half of Mexico´s total production
Sugarcane is VERY IMPORTANT to Mexico´s economy
The sugarcane industry provides about 2.5 million jobs.
Most of the jobs are located in Mexico´s poorest states because they need more money
There are over 60 sugarmills in Mexico
Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Tabasco export about 400,000 tons of sugarcane annually
Some rocks and soil there are made from volcanoes; so the Central Plateau is sometimes called the Volcanic Plateau.
At the Yucatan Peninsula they fish a lot. The usual catch is sea bass, octopus, and sharks. Oil is pretty important, and sand, gravel, clay, and salt are mined.
Q: What is economy? How do natural resources affect the economy of a nation?
A: Economy is the wealth of a country or region, especially stuff including goods and services. Economy is based usually off of goods, and lots of natural resources are goods. Another thing is that people who live in that place may not have to pay more for the goods, and exporting the natural resources might make more money.
There is hardly any and polluted fresh water in the north
You can't get any fresh water (or it's really bad) in central and southeast Mexico
The forests are getting destroyed
There's widespread erosion so you can't grow many crops
Silver: Silver is mostly mined in Zacatecas and Guanajuato; but it's also mined in Chihuahua and Durango. Silver is becoming more valuble to Mexico as a natural resource.
Gold: Gold is mostly mined in Guanajuato and Durango. 24,000 kilograms (or about 52,910 pounds) of gold are mined each year. New gold mines are still being opened.
