sent to a Latin school in Mansfield. Next he moved to
Magdeburg in 1497. Then in 1498,
he went to Eisenach. Luther only had two choices to make: Go into law 1484 Luther and his family moves to Mansfield Luther attends the University of Erfurt as a student going into law. 1501 Luther received his Master's degree in arts. 1505 Luther was returning from school and got caught in a thunderstorm. He thought he was going to die so he swore to St. Anne that he would become a monk if he survived the thunderstorm. 1505 Luther became a priest in the city of Wittenberg Luther is excommunicated from Rome
Luther arrives at Diet of Worms 1508 1521 January 3rd or go into a religious life with the church Luther's father wanted him to continue
bringing honor to the family.
Hans wanted Martin to become a lawyer. So Martin chose to become a lawyer. That same year Luther drops out of law school and keeps his promise. Luther became a monk. Once Martin dropped out of the law school he
entered the monastery in Erfurt to become a monk. Martin immediately dedicated himself to God and the monastery. He dedicated himself by fasting, flagellations, endless hours in prayers, and constant confession However the more he did these things the more
he realized how truly sinful he was. Luther was very troubled about this. So his superior Johann von Staupitz wanted to distract him from these problems. He order Luther to pursue a academic career. Since martin was now a priest. He had to start studying the scriptures in depth. Family This was when Luther realized that the church
had overlooked many key points. He then wrote everything that the church was doing
wrong. He wrote it all on a piece of paper, nailed it on
the churches front doors, and named it the Ninety Five
Theses. The church started getting angry at Luther
because people stopped buying indulgences
for forgiveness of sins The church wanted to Luther to recant all
works and words and then he would be
forgiven. Outside of Jesus and the Apostle Paul, there has been more written about Martin Luther than any other man in world history. So the church then had Luther come in front of a
council. It was called the Diet of Worms. Luther believed that salvation is a gift of God’s grace (His undeserved love). Luther start teaching people that salvation is a gift of God's grace, that it is received by faith and trust in God's promise to forgive our sins by Jesus Christ's death on the cross. -Luther’s 95 Theses questioned many teachings in the Roman Catholic Church
-It was quickly copied and published all over Europe. Because of the 95 theses, Pope Leo X, with a Papal Bull, condemned Luther’s Protestant views as heretical in 1520. At the Diet of Worms, he was given the chance to Recant (change his mind about his writings and teachings), knowing he would probably be executed, but he did NOT, and said, “Here I stand...God Help me.” Luther was kidnapped by his powerful friend, prince Frederick the Wise of Saxony.
He was brought to a castle and hid there for over a year. During this time he started translating the Bible into the peoples’ language. Luther finished translating the Greek New Testament into the German language He published the first five book of the Old Testament, the German Pentateuch 1521 April 17
He published the entire Bible in German in the 1530’s Luther wrote the “Small Catechism,” a book of questions and answers to be memorized by the people. Luther wrote many hymns that are still sung today, like, “A Mighty Fortress is our God.” Martin Luther escaped martyrdom and died of natural causes on February 18, 1546 at the age of 62. Most world historians consider Martin Luther one of the top five most influential people to have lived in the last thousand years. 1522 Luther was baptized on the day of the Feast of St. Martin of Tours, He revived his name after the St. Martin.
