Transcript of The American Civil War (1861 - 1865)

The American Civil War (1861 - 1865)
November 1860: Lincoln became the first Republican president.
The beginning of the war
In 1861 the Confederate States opened fire upon Fort Sumter in Charleston.
During the war
In the beginning of the war the southern army led by General Lee succeeded in a lot of battles.
After battles in Virginia, Louisiana and Tennessee in spring 1863, the Union army and the southern army collided in Gettysburg (Pennsylvania).
The end of the war
The defending Confederate army failed, leading to Lee's surrender to Grant on April 9, 1865. All Confederate generals surrendered by that summer.
The President
5 days after the surrender of General Lee, president Lincoln attended a play in a theater. John Wilkes Booth, an actor and supporter of the CSA, shot the president in the head.
He opposed the expansion of slavery in the USA
One month later, several southern states, which depended on slaves, separated from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America (CSA). Jefferson Davis became president of the CSA.
Abraham Lincoln

After that more states seceded from the USA:

In 1863 Lincoln introduced The Emancipation Proclamation, in which slavery in the southern states is declared as illegal. And where he underlined the basic rights of every human being.
This battle is considered as a turning point of the war. The Union (under General Ulysses S Grant) won that battle but could not break up the confederate southern army. But now the Union continued to defeat Lee`s army.
The result of that bloody conflict was the death of more than 620,000, with millions more injured.
General Grant became the 18. president of the USA.
