fdbjsafdskalfdsafdsafdsadsfdsafdsfdfdsafdsafdsfdsafdsafdsa Iowa Hawkeyes Football 1872-Football was played as a club sport 1882- Started playing intermural games against other colleges In 1889 Iowa organized their first varsity football team In 1889 the Hawkeyes also played in the first ever collegiate football game played in Iowa and the first west of the Mississippi. They lost to Grinnel College 24-0 In 1890 Iowa scored its first ever touchdown. A 70 yard blocked kick, ran in by Martin Simpson The following game they scored 19 touchdowns (worth 4 points each) and beat Iowa Wesleyan for the first win in school history. Final score 91-0 1892-Hired first head football coach, E.A. Dalton. Also joined first conference. The Western Interstate University Football Association In 1930 Iowa was suspended from conference play for illegal recruiting, which tarnished their name after all the wins and great coaches they had had. Like three years without a loss or allowing a touchdown from 1920-1923. In 1939 the head coach decided that even after a few rough years Iowa could still be a good team. But only if his starters played the entire game. So they became known as the Ironmen, who would be led by Iowa's only Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick. Who the new football stadium is now named after. 1980's-1996 The Hayden Fry era began. Arguably the best coach in Iowa history. He led them to 3 Rose Bowl wins and appearances along with numerous other bowl game victories. The most memorable would be in Fry's last game as coah in the 1996 Sun Bowl. The Hawkeyes wore straight black helmets in honor of one of the player's mom, who died in a car accident on the way to the game The Kirk Ferentz era. 1998-Present. Kirk Ferentz is also a great coach in Iowa History leading them to 11 straight bowl game appearances, along with contending for numerous conference championships. 2011- Iowa had its first ever first round draft pick (for the NFL). Defensive End Adrian Clayborn, picked 20th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
