Principles of TENS
Melzack & Wall (1965) - Pain Gate Control Theory
Stimulating afferent nerves, 'closes' the gate in dorsal horn, to pain signals from other nerves
Selective depolarization of afferent nerves
Adjusting parameters on TENS unit, perception of pain can be altered
Bipolar
- 2 electrodes equal in size, placed on treatment area close to each other; ACTIVE electrodes
Unipolar
- 2 electrodes of unequal size, creates one ACTIVE and one DISPERSIVE electrodes
Active electrode; applied to treatment area
Dispersive electrode; applied to remote area
Quadripolar
- 4 electrodes of equal size, pulses criss-cross the target tissue
