Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

Parallel lines are 2 lines that have the same slope but have different y-intercepts. Parallel lines never intersect Perpendicular lines are 2 lines that cross eachother. The slope of perpendicular lines are opposite reciprocals.

Parallel Letter to Joseph 1. NEVER intercect
2. Same Slope
3. 2 vertical lines are
parallel
4. 2 horizontal lines are
parallel
5. Use distributibe property
to solve
6. Equation has to be in
slope intercept form
7. No solution
8. Inconsistent
9. 2 lines
10. Know the Symbol 1. 2 equations
2. Always Intersect
3. Opposite Reciprocals
4. Lines that intersect at
right angles

are perpendicular
6. Exactly one solution
7. Consistent and independent
8. Has to be in y=mx+b form
9. Use distributive property to solve
10. If a line is not intersecting at 90
degrees then it is not perpendicular Skit A patient comes into the emergency department withsome broken bones. On all of the x-rays of the bones the part being xrayed must be either parallel or perpendicular to the image receptor(the film). These 2 views will show a break or fracture in both a anterior-posterior and lateral position which showes if & where bones are misplaced.

Skit-
Xray tech 1- I think this kid has a broken hand

Xray tech 2- So in order to see if it is broken, i need to take 2 x rays right?

Xray tech 1- Yes make sure you have the joints perpendicular to the film which is a lateral & the other one has to have the joints parallel to the film.

Student- Why do we have to have the joints perpendicular & parallel to the film?

Tech- Because in doing that the x ray shows if the bone is displaced or broken from one side to the other and from top to bottom.

Student- Ok - here goes-

Tech- Great Job! I see a small fracture on the xray that had the joint perpendicular to the film and it shows a slight fracture that is displaced on the palm side. The s ray that the joints are parallel shows a fracture but only shows a line in the bone but doesnt show which way the bone moved.

Student- So now we will cast him?

Tech- No we wont, but the doctor will. Perpendicular lines do not have the same slope
But parallel do!
Perpendicular cross eachother they do
but parallel dont
Perpenicular lines are independent
but parallel arent
Perpendicular lines are very consistent
parallel are inconsistent
