What is love...?
Human work proceeds directly from persons created in the image of God and called to prolong the work of creation by subduing the earth, both with and for one another.210 Hence work is a duty: "If any one will not work, let him not eat."211 Work honors the Creator's gifts and the talents received from him. It can also be redemptive. By enduring the hardship of work212 in union with Jesus, the carpenter of Nazareth and the one crucified on Calvary, man collaborates in a certain fashion with the Son of God in his redemptive work. He shows himself to be a disciple of Christ by carrying the cross, daily, in the work he is called to accomplish.213 Work can be a means of sanctification and a way of animating earthly realities with the Spirit of Christ.

What does it mean to be a human person?
Body AND Soul
Why is it important that we are body and soul?
Body - Material and earthly; we exist and relate in and through our bodies.
Bodily needs: food, clothing, shelter
Soul - Immaterial & spiritual; we can relate to God -
capax Dei.
Our lives are more than survival but have depth and meaning.
Spiritual needs: prayer, worship, freedom, morality, culture, friendship, education, & love.
Prayer, laws, charitable donations, becoming a good person, etc.
"What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate... So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand." (Romans 7)

Man's first sin

But the laity, by their very vocation, seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and
by ordering them according to the plan of God
. They live in the world, that is, in each and in all of the secular professions and occupations. They live in the ordinary circumstances of family and social life, from which the very web of their existence is woven.
They are called there by God that by exercising their proper function and led by the spirit of the Gospel they may work for the sanctification of the world from within as a leaven
. In this way they may make Christ known to others, especially by the testimony of a life resplendent in faith, hope and charity. Therefore, since they are tightly bound up in all types of temporal affairs it is their special task to order and to throw light upon these affairs in such a way that they may come into being and then continually increase according to Christ to the praise of the Creator and the Redeemer.

To truly "love your neighbor", you must both love the person before you and work to order-aright and consecrate the world to God through transforming the secular.
This includes the job you have, the family you raise, and the community and nation within which you live.

A Story....
Once upon a time there was a small village on the edge of a river. The people there were good and life in the village was good. One day a villager noticed a baby floating down the river. The villager quickly swam out to save the baby from drowning. The next day this same villager noticed two babies in the river. He called for help, and both babies were rescued from the swift waters. And the following day four babies were seen caught in the turbulent current. And then eight, then more, and still more!

The villagers organized themselves quickly, setting up watchtowers and training teams of swimmers who could resist the swift waters and rescue babies. Rescue squads were soon working 24 hours a day. And each day the number of helpless babies floating down the river increased. The villagers organized themselves efficiently. The rescue squads were now snatching many children each day. While not all the babies, now very numerous, could be saved, the villagers felt they were doing well to save as many as they could each day. Indeed, the village priest blessed them in their good work. And life in the village continued on that basis.
One day, however, someone raised the question, "But where are all these babies coming from? Let’s organize a team to head upstream to find out who’s throwing all of these babies into the river in the first place!“

Rights & Responsibilities
All persons have essential and fundamental rights such as the right to life, faith, family, food, shelter, culture, education, a job, and basic healthcare. With each right we have a responsibility to promote the rights of others or else our rights are empty.
Common Good
The sum total of social conditions that allow for the flourishing of both individuals and groups. This includes respect for the person, social well-being and development of the group, and peace and security.
Preferential Option for the Poor
Ultimately all goods belong to God and we are merely his stewards. The powerless and poor must be protected or society will fragment and all will suffer. Equal dignity of all extends to the homeless and jobless. Jesus has a special love for the poor and even identifies himself with them in Matthew 25.
Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
The economy must serve the people, not the other way around. The dignity of work is safeguarded when workers' rights are respected. These rights include productive work, decent and fair wages, union participation, private property, and economic initiative.
Solidarity
We are members of the same human family. It involves us committing ourselves to the good of each and every person and standing by their side -- literally and figuratively. It means to work for peace and justice.
Stewardship
We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God's creation. In being good stewards we are being just and loving to the future generations.
