Victoria Lim Sue-Wei
Reason
Real life situation
reason & emotion are interconnected
Australia and other countries do not condone whaling
Japanese view ban on whaling as a threat to their culture
Vs
Is Reason more important than Emotion when it comes to determining Ethics?
Why is Reason important?
Ensures that ethical judgements or decisions are made with
fairness
Prevents special pleading/justification of behaviour
Limitations of Reason
How does Reason help us make Ethical judgements?
Categorical Imperatives
Universal Law: "Act only according to a maxim that could become a universal law"
Law of Respecting Others: treat others with respect and how you expect to be treated
Both Laws imply that cultural differences should be respected
How does Emotion help us make Ethical judgements?
EMOTION
Leads to moral absolutism – the belief that certain moral principles should always be adhered to, regardless of context
Which universal law is more important when 2 contradict?
Ethical Reasoning is
contextual
We make judgements/decisions
based on personal beliefs
We attach
personal moral judgements
to our decisions
Emotions vary
with our individual set of beliefs
Identical situations evoke different emotions
in different people
Why is Emotion important?
Immanuel Kant:
Fixed, rule based
approach to Ethics
Actions should be motivated by Reason alone
Emotions are too unreliable
An ethical action
must fulfill certain duties
, regardless of feelings
Adam Smith:
Emotions = moral sentiments
Designed specifically to help us behave morally
Prevents moral coldness
Empathy allows us to
accept the practices of those with different values
from our own.
Limitations of Emotion
Clouds our judgement, leading to
inconsistent conclusions
Creates
biased perceptions or false generalizations

conclusion
Reason: Nuclear is the cleanest form of reliable energy.
Emotion: Fear and anger - unethical to expose communities and future generations to toxic nuclear waste.
Debate over nuclear energy
As an IB learner:
Understanding business concepts like CSR

Reason: Ethical business practices are costly... BUT
Negative emotions of consumers may jeopardize business reputation
Both Emotion and Reason overlap
Those who are making moral judgements against Japan use Emotion more
Whaling
Reason is
NOT
more important than Emotion in determining Ethics
Aristotle: One part of the soul is non-rational, while one has reason… Moral virtue arises out of the proper interaction between these two parts.
Both WOKs are mutually dependent
Thank you!
