Mission: Nutrition and Digestion
Captained by: Mehak N Parwani
You brave explorer are about to enter a world that is a mystery, one that is inside of you. Your mission is to follow and see where this meal goes.
Location: The Digestive System. Explorer: You.
Date/Time: Now.
Mission Information:

You will be following this delicious Mexican fiesta meal that consists of:
-One Mexican chicken breast
-One ounce of tortilla chips
-One ear-large corn
-One 12 ounce cola can
Meal Plan:
Meal Statics:

This meal has 28.3g of fat, 68.8g of protein and 102.6g of carbohydrates which in total is 922.8 calories.
Most of the Carbohydrates are made up by the tortilla chips, cola and the corn.
Most of the Protein is made up of the chicken breast.
Most of the fat is made up by the chicken and tortilla chips.

Take notes.

Digestion Starts in the mouth
Two types of digestion takes place, Physical and Chemical
Physical Digestion is using our teeth (Canines, Molars and Incisors). The food is broken down (physically) into pieces of food that are easier to digest
Chemical Digestion is done using the enzyme Amylase, that breaks down the Starch into glucose.
Explorer Note: Some of the tortilla chip is being broken down here.
No digestion takes place in the esophagus
The purpose of the esophagus is to deliver the food from the mouth to rest of the digestive system
The food moves smoothly down the esophagus because of the saliva in the mouth that makes is soggy and easy to move.
The food is send down using muscles, not gravity
Explorer note: No digestion takes place in the esophagus.
The epiglottis is a flap that separates the wind pipe from the esophagus
This flap prevents food from entering the lungs
No digestion takes place here
Explorer Note: When eating do not talk or else when you are speaking the epiglottis will be opened for oxygen and food could get stuck and choke you if it gets in.
The salivary glands are ducts where saliva is produced to make is simpler and easier for food to travel down the esophagus.
Explorer Note: The enzyme amylase is also produced here
The first stop after the esophagus
Gastric juices (enzymes and gastric acids) are used to make the food tinier
When the food has been through the process of being tinier it is called chyme
The food is still too big to go inside the bloodstream
Enzyme called pepsin is located in the stomach that breaks down protein into amino acids while lipase begins to break down fats
Hydrochloric acid aids pepsin with digesting food in the stomach
Explorer note:
-Acids in the stomach would burn you with out stomach lining.
-Chicken will begin to chemically break down here
Bile is produced in the liver
The liver cleans our blood
No digestion takes place here
Explorer note: Liver performs the function of a cleaning filter for the blood.
The pancreas stores bile, whereas the liver produces it
Insulin is produced in the pancreas
Insulin controls sugar levels in the bloodstream
Explorer note: The pancreas controls the insulin levels in your body.
The food goes through the intestine, which is 22 feet long!
Enzymes break the food down (e.g bile is used to break down fats) so that they are small enough to fit through the walls of the small intestine
The holes in the wall of the small intestine are called 'villus'
Through the villus, food molecules travel into the bloodstream and get transported throughout the body
Absorption is the name of the process when the small food molecules are absorbed through the villus into the blood stream
Explorer note: The small intestine is longer than the large intestine (ironic!)
The appendix has no function
Explorer note: Charles Darwin previously believed that the body used the appendix to digest leaves and grass, but this changed as we evolved and our diets changed.
The food that cannot be digested is taken here
Water is removed from these foods in the large intestine
If too much water is removed then you will suffer constipation
If too little water is removed then you will suffer diarrhea
Explorer note: Food spends about 12 hours in the large intestine
Feces is the food that is left over after digestion
The rectum stores feces for a temporary period of time
The feces are let out through the anus
Explorer note: This is the end of the digestive system
Congratulations on a successful mission, explorer!

Corn contains- vitamins and minerals and carbohydrates
Cola contains- carbohydrates (in the form of sugar)
Tortilla chips contain- carbohydrates
Chicken contains- protein and fats
Mission facts:

Carbohydrates is broken down by Amylase and becomes glucose in the mouth.

Protein is broken down by prostates which consist of other enzymes and becomes amino acids in the stomach and the small intestine.

Fats are broken down by bile and lipase making fatty acids.

The key to a balanced diet is..
The key to a balanced diet is having the correct amount of protein, vitamins and mineral, fiber, protein, fats, cholesterol (in oils)
