Persephone When Persephone got kidnapped by Hades, her mother Demeter, goddess of harvest got very mad. Demeter went around asking all of the gods if they saw who took Persephone. Helios told Demeter that Zeus gave Hades permission to take Persephone as a wife. Demeter demanded that Zeus got Persephone back immediately!!! Zeus sent Hermes to get Persephone from the underworld. Persephone was eager to leave , but Hades insisted that she ate some of their pomegranate seeds before she left. When Persephone returned,Demeter told her she was going to have to rule the with Hades for 1/3 of the year because she ate the sacred food of the underworld (pomegranate seeds) Whenever Persephone left, there would be a drought and it would be cold. When Persephone came back, plants would bloom and the land would be fertile. This is how the seasons came to be.
