Design Brief
AN INTRODUCTION
As a Product Designer at Citipointe Design Solution, I was required to prepare initial ideas and, design & build an occasional table or similar furniture for one of our clients. Therefore, I am going to design and construct a new laptop table for my client (mentioned in PPT slide ‘Client of Table’) that is practical, comfortable and unique in design. This product is proposed for people aged 4+ as there may be small pieces that may harm babies. Its purpose is to allow the client to comfortably remain in the preferred position with everything in need, and thus having no necessity to move for a long period of time.

The process: a step closer towards the outcome
Product Design Folio: Occasional table (Laptop Table)
With the intention to make a practical, comfortable and unique laptop table, I have come up with an idea to laser cut a pattern on the body of the laptop table in order for the laptop be able to cool down while the client using the laptop. Further, the body of the laptop table will be cut in a puzzle shape with pine wood. This product is intended to appeal to a wide range of people whilst being fairly cheap to manufacture. The environment that the product will mainly be used is the bedroom or otherwise the kitchen and the living room.
However, with the limited source of technology and time, the design had to be fixed multiple times (evident in ppt slides for ‘Table Design’). Although this laptop table has the ‘power’ to make people become lazy in movement, it will help the client to focus on what he/she needs to focus on without any interference caused when wandering around the house. The size of this product is estimated to be ___mm wide, ___mm long, and ___mm high. The colour scheme would mainly be varnished and light coloured pine wood with a small portion of it being clear acrylic
(__mm x __mm).

Purpose of Table: to fix posture when watching drama using laptops, ipad, etc. Also made for studying purposes
Purpose of choosing specific design: The majority of laptop table sold in stores and online are simple mainstream ones. As I've always wished for unique laptop tables, I have decided to construct a laptop table that is not mainstream whilst being productive.

Design 1 vs. Design 2
Chosen design = Design 2
PMI Table
Positives
May be used as a group and/or individually
Easily portable
The leg design is unique (Unlike the majority of the table legs, the legs designed for this table is designed so that the legs on a single desk would not interfere with the other when the four individual tables are joined.
Will be able to test the constructor's skills as this design will not need the help from many machines. (for the constrcution of the legs, not the table lid)
Diverse in colour range.
Minuses
Interesting
Easily portable
a product needed the house of the client.
The process needed to construct this product is much more difficult than Design 1.
Although this design requires the work of machines more than Design 1, it will not lack in testing the constructor's skills as the process required after the use of machines will be hard enough to test his/her skills.
Low pricing (around $15 estimated when excluding cost of machines)

DESGIN 2
DESIGN 1
DESGIN 2
High pricing (minimum. $30 when excluding cost of machines)
Relies too much on the laser cutter unless done by hand.
Too large in size (when grouped)
Too small in size individually to use it as one's studying desk.
Requires lots of help from machines.
Not diverse in colour
complicated in process
DESIGN 1
DESGIN 2
The design is in a shape of a heart individually. However, when joined, it forms a four leaf clover.
The colours chosen were researched (red -> helps with absorption of complex information or revising for exams, blue -> stimulates workers to a higher performance; symbolizes royalty, yellow -> enhances concentration, green -> symbolizes nature; calms people's nerves
The design is in a shape of a puzzle, unlike many other laptop tables.
Laser cut air cool holes in the shape of snow flakes to allow the laptop to cool while being used.

As mentioned in the design brief (refer to slide 3), I wanted to construct a laptop table that is unique. This decision was made while researching laptop tables. While researching, I have found that the majority of the laptop tables are VERY productive, but they lack in uniqueness as all their designs are just the plain old 'square'. Therefore, with the intention to construct a unique laptop table, I have decided to make the lid of my table top in a shape of a puzzle (which is not too fancy or too simple).
As a student who owns a laptop which shuts down when not in use with a cooler, I found it important to make a laptop table which has the ability to cool laptops. As many laptop tables today are sold with the ability to cool laptops, I have decided to make one for my own. However, with the limited budget and use of machines/technology, a fan was not available for the laptop table. Therefore, as the over heating of laptops are mainly caused due to the heat kept in the space between the desk and the laptop, I have decided to create a space where the heat may be released, reducing the possibility of the laptop being overheated.
With the intention to construct a productive laptop table, I have come up with an idea to build a laptop with side shelves. The role these side shelves would be to hold files/documents while being able to separate the files into different categories neatly. Further, these side shelves will be attached to the main body of the table in an gle estimated to be 45degrees. This is due to the fact that if the side shelves were built in a 90 degrees angle, the laptop will be too wide, making it uneasy to carry around the house. Therefore, with side shelves angled at 45degrees, it will not only be productive, but will be a portable table that can be carried without bumping into walls an people.
Bed
Sofa
These are the various ways the laptop table may be used.

The purpose of laptop tables is so that he/she could use his/her laptop or any object similar on a soft, unbalanced surface such as the bed and the sofa. Further, it also advices in helping the laptop to level up to his/her eyes. Therefore, I have chosen some places in the clients house that I thought the laptop table would be useful in; the chosen places are the main living room and the client's bedroom.
