Transcript of Satanism

There are perhaps ten thousand Satanists in North America
However on the official Church of Satan website Diane LaVey who was the High Priestess from 1966 till 1984, Michael Aquino who was the senior Magister of the Church and Editor of the Cloven Hoof Newsletter and Zeena LaVey who was High Priestess from 1985 till 1990, have all affirmed that the membership of the Church of Satan never exceeded 300 people
Membership numbers are kept secret and are quite impossible to estimate
The largest satanic organization is the Church of Satan, founded by Anton LaVey.
Two main types of Satanists are
Theistic Satanists
One who worships the Christian devil
Although the Christian Churches taught during the Renaissance that devil worshipers were very common, such individuals were in fact quite rare, and remain so
Religious Satanists
One who accepts Satan as a pre-Christian life-principle worth emulating (ex. the Church of Satan).
This is the more common type that is atheistic and simply uses Satan as a symbol (ie they do not actually worship him as a god) representing their desires of self-pleasure/indulgence, revenge (an eye for an eye), and truth seeking (using Lucifer as a symbol of enlightenment)
Key Beliefs
The 9 Satanic Statements
Religious Holidays, Celebrations, Ceremonies and Rituals
The Sigil of Baphomet
A Key symbol in Laveyan Satanism is the Sigil of Baphomet
The Sigil of Baphomet is seen as the main symbol of The Church of Satan
The Sigil of Baphomet was not seen as the primary symbol of Satanism before the Church of Satan and the satanic bible started using it.
Before the Church of Satan, Satanism was most commonly represented with inverted crosses, and blasphemous parodies of Christian art.
The Sigil of Baphomet is a pentagram (which stems from Pythagorean tradition) with the head of a goat within the pentagram.
The pentagram has for a long time been associated with demonic activities
Two circles around the pentagram with the word “leviathan” written in Hebrew (starts at lowest letter and moves counter clockwise)
Goat refers to the goat of mendes which is a symbol of the Egyptian neter amon.
Symbol takes many cultures into account
Symbol is seen on the cover of the satanic bible and the Church of Satan has trademarked their specific version of the Sigil of Baphomet
First seen in 1897 in the book La Clef de la Magie Noire, by Stanislas de Guaita
Highest holiday in Satanism is your own birthday
“Every man is a god if he chooses to recognize himself as one.” (The Satanic Bible)
Celebrate the day you were brought to earth by treating yourself and buying yourself gifts
1. Satan represents indulgence, instead of abstinence!
2. Satan represents vital existence, instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom, instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates!
5. Satan represents vengeance, instead of turning the other cheek!
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible, instead of concern for psychic vampires!
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development”, has become the most vicious animal of all!
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
9. Satan has been the best friend the church has ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years!
To a Satanist “God”, or whatever term you prefer, is the balancing force in nature and is not concerned with human suffering
Man is responsible for the actions and reactions of the world
Satanists don’t believe in fate
Don’t sit back and pray for things to happen, go out and make them happen
Positive thinking and positive action gets results
Don’t pray for forgiveness, realize your mistake (while acknowledging our human nature to falter), learn from it, be sorry, and never repeat the same mistake
Beliefs are based on man’s natural instincts, accepts man as he is
No hypocritical self-deceit
The old gods didn’t die, they fell to Hell and became devils
Devils of past religions have animal features, represents man’s need to deny that he too is an animal
Kindness only to the deserving
You can’t love everyone, you lose natural powers of selection
Love used too frequently becomes meaningless, indiscriminate love is unnatural
Love strongly and completely but, never turn the other cheek to enemies
Repressed hatred can lead to physical and emotional ailments, releasing hatred is vital
“Indulgence instead of abstinence.”
The simplest description of satanic beliefs
They encourage followers to indulge their natural desires
Indulgence is different than compulsion
Indulgence is a choice, compulsion is not
Without release, an indulgence can become a compulsion
By employing indulgence, desires don’t control you
Natural force makes man “sinful” in the Christian definition, Satanists believe natural force preserves man and his emotions
Indulging in the Christian Seven Deadly Sins
Satanists believe in indulging all of the Christian Seven Deadly Sins
They believe that they lead to physical/mental/emotional satisfaction
Gluttony is simply eating more than is necessary to survive
Pride is looking at the possessions of others and wanting them for yourself
Both gluttony and pride are the motivating forces behind ambition, which is necessary in any accomplishment
Sloth can be as simple as lying in bed past your alarm
Any sexual desire is lust, sexual desire is natural, a natural feeling is a Christian sin
A sacrifice isn’t necessary in a ritual, any intense emotion can take the place
Satanists don’t perform sacrifices to please the gods
A victim is symbolically killed in a destruction ritual with a hex or curse, the physical or emotional or mental destruction is not attributable to the magician
A fit human sacrifice is someone who has unjustly wronged you, gone out of his way to hurt you, or deliberately caused harm or trouble to you or those you love (a person asking to be cursed by their actions, social cancer)
It’s a symbolic sacrifice but if the curse leads to the sacrifice’s death you’ve done a societal service
Animals and babies are never to be used as sacrifices as they are seen in sacred regard because they don’t deny their natural desires
Humans are the only animals with the awareness that they’ll die
Animals always fight for survival but humans have been known to give up
Martyrdom is seen as stupid, the exception is fighting for the safety of a loved one, a death for a political or religious reason is looked down on
They encourage enjoying every aspect of life
If life is truly being lived, there’s less reason to give up or die
The ego is important as it provides strength in ourselves

“The change in situations or events in accordance with one’s will, which would, using normally accepted methods, be unchangeable” (LaVey 110).
Black Magic
2 categories, ritual/ceremonial magic and non-ritual/manipulative magic
Ritual magic:
Formal ceremony in a specific, designated permanent or temporary space
“Its main function is to isolate the otherwise dissipated adrenal and other emotionally induced energy, and convert it into a dynamically transmittable force” (LaVey 111).
It’s an emotional act, not intellectual as the intellectual aspects occur before the beginning of the ritual
Known as greater magic
Non-ritual magic:
Creates “change, in accordance with one’s own will” (LaVey 111).
Known as lesser magic
In order to manipulate an individual you must first be able to attract and hold their attention
The “command to look” can be accomplished with sex, sentiment, wonder or a combination
Attractive women (witches) or men (warlocks) can use their sexuality
Older men or women often have success with sentiment as they appear innocent
Wonder is for the alarming or unusual, accomplished by using your unpredictability
Looks are an important component in lesser magic
Scent or odour can also be used (a natural scent for mystery, a sexy scent or a familiar/nostalgic scent like cookies for sentiment)
“If a man smite thee on one cheek, smash him on the other”

“Do unto others as they do unto you”
Sexual Freedom
Complete freedom to make independent choices
Sex is a natural part of life and everyone should do what feels right
Free from sexual guilt
All sexualities are accepted (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual etc.)
Freedom to indulge in fetishes and deviations
Expressed on an individual basis, including fetishes
Condones any satisfying sexual activities
All sexual participants must be willing
Sex cannot be used to cause harm
Satanists don’t condone rape, child molestation or bestiality
An open relationship is encouraged if the partners aren’t sexually compatible
Masturbation is encouraged

Psychic Vampires
Individuals who drain others of their vital energy
They make others feels responsible or indebted to them without cause
You often call or visit even though you don’t want to, simply to avoid feeling guilty
You’re constantly doing favour for them, even though they never ask, only hint
They use phrases like “I couldn’t ask you to do that”, making you insist by using reverse psychology
They never demand anything of you as that would be too presumptuous, instead they use subtlety but let their wishes be known
They never outwardly complain and never blatantly impose
A Satanic sin is a sin of omission not commission (what you didn’t say or do instead of what you did say or do)
How to deal with a psychic vampire:
Play dumb and act as if they want nothing from you. Take what they give you graciously and graciously say no to any favours you “owe” them
They’ll act crushed at first but eventually they’ll show their true colours and act angry and vindictive
It’s now your turn to play the victim role and get all the sympathy
The vampire will realize you’ve figured them out and will leave you alone to move onto another victim
Honours St. Walpurgis (also spelled Walpurga or Walbuga)
She was born in Essex, England during the end of the 7th century or the beginning of the 8th century
Educated at Winburn, Dorset and stayed there for 27 years
“Took the veil” or became a nun
Went with other nuns to set up religious houses in Germany
Their first settlement was in Bischofsheim in the diocese of Mainz
2 years later, in 754 A.D. she became the abbess of the Benedictine nunnery at Heidenheim
Her brother Winebald was the head of the monastery
Winebald died in 760 A.D., St. Walpurgis gained superintendence over 2 houses, which she maintained until her death on February 25, 779 A.D.
Her relics were taken with her to Eichstadt, Germany where her body was laid in a hollow rock or cave
The rock leaked a bituminous oil (later called Walpurgis oil) which was believed to have healing properties and could cure diseases
The cave where she was buried became a place of pilgrimage and a church was built there
Walpurgisnacht (May 1st)
Was originally a big fire festival in Britain at the time of the Druids
The Scottish traditionally believe the spirits of the dead along with demons, witches and sorcerers are more active on Halloween
Young people often perform rituals to predict who they’ll marry
General youth merry-making and sensual revelry
Older people protect their homes from evil spirits, witches and demons

Halloween/All Hallows’ Eve/All Saints’ Day (October 31st and November 1st)
First day of every season
The relationship between the sun, moon and the fixed stars determined whether it was a solstice or equinox,
Summer and winter are the solstices, fall and spring are the equinoxes
The summer solstice is in June
The winter solstice is in December
The fall equinox is in September
The spring equinox is in March
The date changes from year to year but they mostly take place on the 21st or 22nd of the month
Solstices and Equinoxes
1. Lust rituals:
Love charm or spell, also known as a sex spell
Creates desire
Involves sex acts in the ritual
2. Compassion rituals:
Also called a sentiment ritual
Helps yourself or others
Aids with health, domestic happiness, business activities, material success etc.
Genuine charity
3. Destruction rituals:
Connected to anger, annoyance, distain, contempt or hate
Also known as a hex, a curse or a destroying agent
Types of Rituals
“...it matters not whether anyone attaches any significance to your workings, so long as the results of the working are in accordance with your will” (LaVey 116).
It’s helpful in a sex or compassion ritual if the recipient believes in magic, though it is not necessary
It’s helpful if the victim of a hex or curse does not believe in magic, if Satan deems the target worthy they will die
Rituals can be performed solo or in a group, curse/destruction rituals can be intensified by a group with a common goal
Compassion or lust rituals may be better preformed alone
A self-imposed ignorance is needed throughout the ritual, using all energy to focus on the goal, no other thought
The beginning and end of the ritual must take place in a chamber/temple/location with the satanic symbols and devices (altar, chalice etc.), the middle of the ritual can be preformed elsewhere
“Magic is like nature itself, and success in magic required working in harmony with nature, not against it” (LaVey 128)

5 Elements of a Ritual
1. Motivation/desire
2. Proper timing
The target should be in a receptive/passive state,
ideally the ritual should be preformed 2 hours before the target wakes up, during their dream sleep
Sex spells preformed on women are most successful right before or immediately after the menstrual cycle
Men are more receptive during the time following the spring equinox
2. Imagery
Can include drawings, paintings, sculptures, written pieces, photographs, an article of clothing, a scent, sounds, music or tableaus
The imagery acts as a constant reminder of the goal and of the recipient, also the imagery can be altered to demonstrate the desired outcome (acts as a blueprint)
3. The direction of energy
Any anxiety or impatience is counterproductive and detracts focus from the goal
4. Balance
This applies mostly to lust and compassion rituals.
Knowing your target, understand the ideal situation to perform a ritual, knowing your limitations, being realistic and balancing your goals with your potential

Other Elements of a Ritual
Black robes or clothing is worn
A naked women is ofter used
One white candle is used to burn destruction curses and several black candles are used to burn written blessing after the rituals
Marks the beginning and end of the ritual
Represents the Chalice of Ecstasy
Sigil of Baphoment
Represents the power of darkness and fertility
19 Enocian Keys in Satanic Bible
Used during rituals
Written in the “language of the angels”
The Enochian Keys can be found in
Enochian (both wirtten in Enochian and English)
Aleister Crowley’s Phonetic version
John Dee’s Old English version (Modern English adapted from this version)
Enochian translated alphabet originally created by John Dee
Adapted by LaVey from the 48 Enochian Calls written by Dee
Enochian Keys
The Four Crown Princes of Hell
Modified version of the alchemic symbol for sulphur, which represents fire and brimstone
Can also be seen to incorporate the symbol for infinity and the cross of Lorraine
The symbol can be seen in the satanic bible and is seen on the Church of Satan’s official website
Satanic Cross
Inverted Cross
The cross of St. Peter is commonly associated with Satanism
The cross of St. Peter was formerly most commonly associated as a symbol in Christianity of St. Peter who was crucified upside down
Satanists have adopted the symbol as meaning the opposite or antithesis of Christianity instead
Origins, Timeline of Significant Events and Founder
Origins of the Names
The name Satan is Hebrew for “adversary,” “accuser,” or “slanderer.”
The word/name Devil/Diablos (Greek) are derived from this
In the Old Testament, the word Satan is applied to many people (including David and an angel) in its original root or meaning
In the New Testament, Satan describes the adversary of good that is more familiar
Satan is first shown to entice people against God in 1 Chronicles 21:1 were he tricks King David into taking a census (considered rebellion against God)
Lucifer is likely an incorrect description
Isaiah 14:12 “How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!” is where the term Lucifer (Morning Star) originates, but it likely refers to the Babylonian King Belshazzar who’s pride was so great that he desired to have a throne that was higher than that of God’s in Heaven, and because of his hubris his kingdom fell.
Founder: Anton Szandor LaVey
1099 to 1307 C.E. The original Sigil of Baphomet was used by the Knights of Templar
1930 (11 April) Anton LaVey was born in Chicago, Illinois
Birth name is Howard Stanton Levey
Parents are Michael and Gertrude Levey
1951 LaVey married fifteen year-old Carole Lansing
1952 LaVey’s first daughter, Karla, was born to LaVey and Lansing

1964 The complete emblem with the added circles and "LVYThN" Hebrew letters appears on the cover of a book by Maurice Bessy
1966 LaVey presented weekend lectures on exotic and occult topics, and by conducting "Witches' Workshops"
Charging $2 a head, filling his living room with the curious and establishing a local reputation as an eccentric
1966 Professional publicist Edward Webber suggested to LaVey that he should form some sort of church and get a charter from the State of California
1966 Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan in San Francisco, California
1966 Diane LaVey became the first High Priestess of the Church of Satan
1966 LaVey shaved his head in 1966 after his wife dared him to,
He kept it because he believed it to be in the tradition of Yezidi devil-worshipping tribes of Iraq, who were said to have carried out a similar ceremony (They don’t)
Misconceptions and Miscommunications
A Satanist decides what is just, then uses the powers of magic to right the situation
Religion of the flesh, the mundane, the carnal, the earthly
Ruled by Satan, the personification of the Left Hand Faith
Satanic philosophy is a combination of psychology and religious dogma
Satan represents an opposition to all religions that serve to frustrate and condemn man for his natural instincts
To become a Satanist you don’t have to give up your soul to the devil or make a pact with him
Most Satanists don’t see Satan as anthropomorphic (cloven hooves, barbed tail and horns) but as a force of nature (powers of darkness)
Satanists are capable of intense love and intense hate, by releasing hate they are more capable to properly love

Kat Kahnert-Wolchak, Nick Plati, Laura Rice and Nick Shepard

O thou mighty light and burning flame of comfort, that unveilest the glory of Satan to the center of the Earth; in whom the great secrets of truth have their abiding; that is called in thy kingdom: "strength through joy," and is not to be measured. Be thou a window of comfort unto me. Move therefore, and appear! Open the mysteries of your creation! Be friendly unto me, for I am the same!, the true worshipper of the highest and ineffable King of Hell!
