PARO
the adorable robotic seal!
What task does the robot perform? What human function or task does it simulate?
This robot is similar to a therapist! It provides the benefits of animal therapy to patients. PARO responds as if it is alive, moving its head and legs, making sounds, and showing your preferred behavior. It also imitates the sound of a baby seal!
The Paro does what many people do for a living; which is to help others heal! They reduce stress, improve motivation, relax patients and do many other things, but mainly make people happy!
Where is this robot used? What is its work envelope (how many degrees of freedom or flexible joints does it have)?
Paro is mostly used in hospitals ,extended care facilities, and retirement homes, where it can help all the patients there.
The Paro has four flexible joints
REAR FLIPPER
NECK
FRONT FLIPPERS
EYELIDS
Is the robot multi-functional?
NO, Paro is only meant to do one thing and that is to help others struggling with different conditions or disorders.
Paro creates an emotional connection with the patient, providing multiple benefits!
How is this robot taught to perform it's task?
Paro learns to behave and act the way that the patient prefers! So if you stroke it every time you touch it, PARO will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked. If you hit it, PARO remembers its previous action and tries not to do that action.
PARO IS VERY SMART!
What sensors does the robot have and how does the robot use these sensors?
PARO has five sensors: tactile, light, audition, temperature, and posture sensors, these sensors help PARO be aware of the people and environment around them.
With the
light sensor
Paro recognizes when it is light or dark. This robot can feel being stroked and beaten by the
tactile sensor
or being held by the
posture sensor.
He can recognize the direction of voice and familiar names, greetings, or praise using
audio sensor.
Name the advantages and disadvantages of using a robot to complete this task.
ADVANTAGES:
-It provides the same benefits as animal therapy but does not make a mess like real animals.
-Can be taken to any environment and can work with all people.
DISADVANTAGES:
-Requires charging often.
-It's price ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 dollars.
Describe the impact that this robot has had or could have.
What PARO can do is very simple, but through it PARO can reach others. PARO works with people in care facilities, and can really make a difference because of the relationship it creates between the two. In Japan it has already been shown how beneficial PARO has been to the elders with Dementia and can be beneficial any where!
What type of jobs/careers can this robot create to provide employment?
PARO doesn't really create employment, but rather is there to help the care takers of patients and strengthen the bond between them.
Predict and explain how this robot may be altered to perform more or different tasks in the future.
I predict that they will probably offer more animal options instead of just the seal. I also think they should continue adding more life like qualities to it. I predict they will also make PARO be able to do more things, like walking or doing tricks.
Here is a short video of PARO at work:
