the "silent killer"
1/3 Americans
1 billion people worldwide
systolic pressure
pressure when heart is beating
diastolic pressure
pressure when heart is relaxed
> 140 mmHg
> 90 mmHg
< 120 mmHg is normal
< 80 mmHg is normal
while the direct cause of hypertension is usually unknown, there are known risk factors:
increases risk
estimated that 1/2 of Americans over 60 have hypertension
hypertension more common in African Americans than in Hispanics or Caucasians
earlier onset and greater severity as well
family history
hypertension usually runs in families
"genetic predisposition"
increases the risk of hypertension
(or obese)
increased risk with:
too much dietary sodium
not enough potassium
excessive alcohol consumption
insufficient physical activity
increases risk
blood pressure is directly related to the risk of heart disease and stroke, regardless of classification
blood pressure
risk doubles with every 20/10 mmHg increase, starting with increases over 115/75 mmHg
physical activity
5-7 mmHg decrease
dietary salt reduction
2-8 mmHg decrease
increased fruits & veggies, reduced fat intake
8-14 mmHg decrease
weight reduction
5-20 mmHg decrease per 20 lbs lost
less than 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day
2-4 mmHg decrease
meet recommendations (focus on aerobic)
blood pressure reduction comes AFTER exercise
blood pressure increases during exercise
physical activity
delay exercise if blood pressure is uncontrolled (200/110 mmHg)
exercise at moderate intensity
be aware of the side effects of medications you're taking for high blood pressure
increases urine output
decrease work of heart
ACE inhibitors
block hormone that elevates blood pressure
calcium channel blockers
relax blood vessels
impair body temp regulation
reduces blood glucose (sugar)
may result in sudden drops in blood pressure after exercise
exercise risks
sodium intake
be wary of sodium sensitivity
take in < 2300 mg/day, and <1500 mg/day if you are at higher risk of hypertension
cut back on:
processed food
high-sodium condiments
frozen foods
foods with >20% of your daily sodium
