PEEL So what it is?
You need to know PEEL!
This is a way of answering a question that allows you to show off your knowledge, skills and understanding.
P.E.E.L Stands for:
Point
Evidence
Explain

How is Ping Heroic?
Use the PEE templates to give three examples.
Learning Objective
To be able to use PEEL paragraph structure to develop an effective response.
Example:
Through befriending Danzi, Ping comes to understand the true meaning of friendship discuss.
Ping has never had a real friend until Danzi. She lived with her Master Lan who treated her harshly:

"Lan scowled at her with the distate he reserved for rats, spiders and maggoty meat." (p1)

It is evident that Ping's master does not care for her, as she is compared insects and decaying meat.
Furthermore, Ping never knew what it meant to have anyone who cared for her, except for her rat Hua:
"She couldn't leave without him. He was just a rat, but he was her friend - her only friend" (p46).
This further shows Ping's desperation for friendship, as her only friend is a animal that cannot communicate back, therefore, ping's friendship with Danzi is the first time Ping has ever had a friend to trust and guide her.
What does PEEL do?
We use PEEL to answer comprehension questions about literature novels.

Questions such as: How is language used to creature tension in Harry Potter?

In the future you will use it to write literature essays.
Point
What's your point?
Introduce what your paragraph is.
A statement that you want you make.
Evidence
Back up your point with a relevant, nicely introduced quotation.
A quote from the text.
Explain
Explain what the quote means and how it helps you to demonstrate your point.
Explain how the words in the quotation make the reader think and feel.
Link
Link this point to the next point in the following paragraph.
What does the point and evidence have to do with the question.
If you leave either the top, filling or base out, it is not a proper burger. The same is true when you answer a literature question. If you leave either the point, evidence, explanation or link out it is not a proper response.
Think of PEEL as a burger

How is language used to create tension in Harry Potter?
Onomatopoeia is particularly good at building tension in writing as it makes the description more vivid and real, therefore making the reader imagine these sounds.

Similarly, tension is also created through complications in the plot, especially when the characters are placed in impossible situations.

Language is often used to create tension. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone there are many examples of this.

For example, onomatopoeia such as “boom” and “SMASH” are used in chapter four to build tension.

How is Ping Heroic?
PEEL Example
P: Ping is heroic when she frees Danzi and helps him escape the Dragonhunter.

E: '"Quick!" shouted the girl, undoing the rope with fumbling fingers, "You have to escape." (pg44)'

E: Evidently, Ping demonstrates her first heroic quality in freeing Danzi, despite being frightened, which is emphasized in the lines "with fumbling fingers", as a result, Ping bravely and courageously steps out of her place as a lowly slave girl and intentionally disobeys her Master and the Emperor in saving the Dragon's life, putting her own life at risk in the process.
