Transcript of Telescopes

Telescopes
Telescopes are used to look at the universe. It helps us understand the world above. We study stars, planets, and many other things.
The First Telescopes
No. Not magic like in "Harry Potter," but it is truly amazing how these work. Sorry, Ron.
A telescope basically is an instrument that collects electromagnetic radiation (i.e. visible light).
Types of Telescopes
Optical Telescope
Radio Telescope
X-ray Telescope
Gamma-ray Telescope
High-energy Telescope
Ultraviolet Telescope
Submillimetre Telescope
I'm related to Isaac Newton's teacher, Isaac Barrow.
Where The Word Telescope comes from
From the Greek words
tele
"far"
and
skopein
"to look or see";
teleskopos
"far-seeing".
HOW DARE YOU BECOME BORED! I AM ABSOULETLY DISGUSTED! I AM TRYING TO GIVE A PRESENTATION, AND IT'S NOT MY FAULT! IF YOU WHINE ONE MORE TIME, I WILL SEND YOU OUT OF THIS ROOM! Now let's continue.
What They're Used For
The first telescopes were first used in the Netherlands in 1608. In 1668 Isaac Newton made the first "real" reflecting telescope, today known as the Newtonian Reflector. It's magical, the way these telescopes worked.
What It Does
You'd best be paying attention, or people will think you're.....up to something

Can you see the resemblance?
The main function of a telescope is gathering light. The more light a telescope gathers, the farther you can see. Therefore, larger telescopes enlarge the appearance of the observable universe.
You are a wizard. No, just kidding! This presentation is over. Sorry, for those who did not get the "Harry Potter" commentary. Thank you for watching. Bye!
Scientists can not improve the light gathering of a telescope, just by making it larger. Disturbances and nonuniformities in the atmosphere, affect the amount of light a telescope can gather. This is why you see telescopes atop mountains.
