Sally Mann
Untitled #9, Antietam, 2001 -
Last Measure
Silver Gelatin Print
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

" In the time I am writing, every stalk of corn in the northern and greater part of the field was cut closely as could have been done with a knife, and the slain lay in rows precisely as they had stood in their ranks a few moments before." ~Union General Joseph Hooker

"Again and again, hour after hour, by charges and counter-charges, this portion of the field was lost and recovered, until the green corn that grew upon it looked as if it had been struck by a storm of bloody hail." ~Confederate General John B. Gordon

While clear on the left, the image dissolves into a cloud of emulsion whose darkness suggests the strife and anguish described in the accounts above
Why this speaks to me
Sally Mann is my favorite photographer
I appreciate the process - traditional photography with unconventional materials
Even though Mann's work is photography, her pieces look as if they were done in charcoal (like a drawing)
Mann's work deals a lot with mortality and the body

(
What Remains
2004)
which appeals for my interest in anatomy. I hope to pursue medical illustration at VCU.
