Ball Air Pressure vs. Distance traveled when Struck Micah Bowey Math-Science Project 2013 Does the amount of air in a ball affect how far it can go when kicked or hit? If so, how? Indoors/Environment Dependent How far the ball travels (m) High Pressure = greater rebound, ball deforms less on impact. Low Pressure = softer, lighter. At lower pressure, there's less air friction Ball Pump Taking the air pressure 1)Pump air into the ball until the air pressure gauge reads the intended psi. 2)Position ball on the apparatus Pull the swing back a measured amount, and measure how far the ball goes Line of Best Fit Analysis Decreasing the air pressure from 12psi to 11psi (4.34%) saw the average distance travelled drop by 2.91% Increasing the amount of air by 550% percent from 1psi to 6.5 only affects the mean distance travelled by 4.85% Conclusion There is a strong relationship between the air pressure of a soccer ball and how far it can travel when hit by a constant force. Factors observed: The rebound when the ball was struck by the wooden leg.

Friction The greater the air pressure of the ball, the greater the distance travelled when hit by a constant force, due to the rapid movement and higher air pressure of molecules inside the ball itself.
