Figurative Language: Metaphors and Irony
Metaphor and Irony, What are they?
A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.

Irony is described as the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.
Can you give me some examples of Irony?
"We do our best to preserve the amenities of civilization here." (The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell, page #10)
"I am still a beast at bay," (The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell, page #22)

Have I heard this from somewhere...?
Irony: Wreck-It Ralph (Movie)
By Alina Mullis and Jordan Moss
We chose this picture because it displays a very ironic situation. In this picture the "Caution: Wet Floor Sign" is slipping on a wet floor which ironically is what it was trying to warn others not to do.
The metaphor "Life is a roller coaster" means that life has it's thrills and scary moments. It can be exciting and terrifying. Sometimes, you never know what twists and turns lie ahead.
This image is an example of irony. The letters spell out "soft", but the letters themselves look to be sharp and pointy.
