When the Earth rotates itself around it's axis, the sun's light hits a specific side of the Earth at a time. The area of Earth were the Sun hits is in daytime. Where the Earth isn't hit by the sun is in nighttime.

What causes the seasons?
Many factors tie in to the Earth seasons.
First is the fact that the Earth isn't a perfect circle, it more like an oval. The Earth's orbit takes it close and far way from the Earth. Then the Earth is close to the sun, or at it's perihelion, it is winter in the Northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere. This is because the Earth receives more direct sunlight. When the Earth is far from the sun, or at it's aphelion, it is summer in the Northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere. This is because the Earth receives less direct sunlight.
Why are the days longer in Summer than Winter?
The reason has to do with the Earth's tilt. Let's say the Northern hemisphere is in winter and the Southern hemisphere in summer. The South will get more daylight because it's area is tilted more closer to the sun, receiving most of the direct light from the sun. Now the Northern hemisphere, that is in winter, has shorter days because it is tilted away from the sun, reviving less direct sunlight. It all has to with the angle of the Earth.
Why are the seasons in the Southern hemisphere opposite from the Northern?
It has to do with the angle of the Earth's tilt and how close the Earth is at the sun. The Sun's light is warm. Everyone know that. Let's say the Northern hemisphere's tilt is close to the sun. More direct sunlight and warmth will hit that specific area, warming it up. When the Northern hemisphere is tilted at the sun, the Southern is tilted away. This means that little direct sunlight and warmth will reach that area, causing it to be winter. If the Southern hemisphere is pointed at the sun, the seasons will be opposite of each hemisphere.

What causes apparent changes the sun's position during the year?
It's all in the way the Earth orbits the sun. The Earth and the sun are balanced in orbit due to their barycenter, or balancing point between two objects. But the Sun itself moves because it has to balance with the orbits of the other planets in the solar system. Each planet has a different size and mass. The sun has to move to act as the barycenter for each of them.
