Importance of Red Pandas
Transcript of Importance of Red Pandas
By Freya Overton
Why are red pandas important?
Threats they are Facing
Almost 50 percent of the red panda’s habitat is in the Eastern Himalayas. The loss of nesting trees and bamboo is causing a decline in red panda populations across much of their range as their forest home is being cleared.
1. Global Warming
Red pandas are important because they contribute to clean air and water for 500 million people. This is because they help sustain a healthy forest. Red Pandas live in temperate climates, usually bamboo and hollow trees with an average temperature of 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. The Forests range from Nepal to southwest China. If these forests function properly, then we can guarantee a healthy life for the people, animals and plants of South Asia.
2. Unique Biology
The Red Panda is the only species of its kind in the world. Their behavior is unique and they are specialists in their environment. They also have no close living relatives!
3. Food Chain
Red Pandas play a massive role in the food chain.
Red Panda Predators:
Yellow Throated Marten
If Red Pandas were to become extinct, the animals predators wouldn't have enough to eat. If Red Pandas were to die out it would disrupt the whole food chain and more animals would die. These Pandas eat bamboo, insects, eggs, fruit, leaves and plants. Red Pandas control the growth and population of these animals and species.
Red Pandas play an important role in the ecosystem and it would be a great loss if they became extinct.
1. Over Grazing
Cattle herders continuously allow their cattle to overgraze, this has led to the degradation of Silver fir forests, the preferred habitat of the red panda.
Another threat to the Pandas is illegal hunting. Red pandas are sometimes killed for their coats, which trappers use to make hats and clothing. Red Panda fur is very valuable as they have an under layer of fur to live in cold conditions.
Deforestation is the cutting, clearing and removal of rainforest. This has a major impact on the Red Pandas as their habitat is being destroyed by deforestation. Not only do the Red Pandas suffer from this, a lot of other animals are becoming extinct from this cause. Did you know, on average, 137 species become extinct everyday, or 50,000 each year!
Red Pandas are amazing animals, like other extinct animals they also have the right to live. If we don't act now, soon parts of the ecosystem will fail as animals have a major role to play in our world.
