Transcript of Stars and Galaxies

Black Holes
A
black hole
is an object with gravity so strong that not even light, can escape
Most massive stars (more than 40x the mass of the sun) may become black holes when they die
No light, radio waves, or any other form of radiation can ever get out of a black hole, so it's not possible to detect a black hole directly; astronomers can detect them indirectly
White dwarfs and Neutron Stars
the blue-white core of the star that's left behind cools and becomes a white dwarf
white dwarfs have no fuel, but glow faintly from leftover energy; when it stops glowing and becomes a black dwarf
neutron stars are the remains of high-mass stars and they're even smaller and denser than white dwarf
a neutron star may contain 3x the mass of the sun but be only about 25km in diameter (the size of a city)
Stars and Galaxies
The diameter of the sun is about 100 times that of Earth!

Beyond the solar system, sizes of objects become much larger! One example is the beautiful Cat's Eye Nebula (it's 3 × 10^16 meters across)
The
Milky Way
is part of a cluster of 50 or so galaxies called the
Local Group
. And the Local Group is part of the
Virgo Supercluster
(which contains hundreds of galaxies)
Interesting Facts
Did You Know?
Stars have life spans.
It doesn't have a regular shape
All About Galaxies...
they're a huge group of single stars, star systems and clusters, dust, and gas bound together by gravity
Astronomers classify most galaxies into the following types:
Spiral
,
Elliptical
, and
Irregular
Quasars
are an enormously bright, distant galaxy with a giant black hole at its center
Irregular
They are like a round or flattened ball, generally containing only old stars
Elliptical
It has a bulge in the middle and arms that spiral outward in a pinwheel pattern
Spiral
Did you know...
Our very own galaxy, the
Milky Way
is a spiral galaxy!
Binary star
:

system that has two stars
Eclipsing Binary
:
system in which one star periodically blocks the light from another
Star Clusters
Open clusters
:
loose, disorganized appearance; contain no more than a few thousand stars
Globular clusters
:
large grouping of older stars
Star Systems
Lifecycle of Stars
Scale of the Universe
Universe
:
all of space and everything in it
Since the numbers astronomers often use are often very large or very small, they frequently used scientific notation to describe sizes and distances in the universe
Scientific Notation
:
uses powers of 10 to write very large/small numbers in shorter form
This is Earth!
Death of Stars
After a star runs out of fuel, it becomes a...

Thanks for Watching!
Large-mass stars live shorter than small-mass stars
