Black Holes
black hole
is an object with gravity so strong that not even light, can escape
Most massive stars (more than 40x the mass of the sun) may become black holes when they die
No light, radio waves, or any other form of radiation can ever get out of a black hole, so it's not possible to detect a black hole directly; astronomers can detect them indirectly
White dwarfs and Neutron Stars
the blue-white core of the star that's left behind cools and becomes a white dwarf
white dwarfs have no fuel, but glow faintly from leftover energy; when it stops glowing and becomes a black dwarf
neutron stars are the remains of high-mass stars and they're even smaller and denser than white dwarf
a neutron star may contain 3x the mass of the sun but be only about 25km in diameter (the size of a city)
Stars and Galaxies
The diameter of the sun is about 100 times that of Earth!

Beyond the solar system, sizes of objects become much larger! One example is the beautiful Cat's Eye Nebula (it's 3 × 10^16 meters across)
Milky Way
is part of a cluster of 50 or so galaxies called the
Local Group
. And the Local Group is part of the
Virgo Supercluster
(which contains hundreds of galaxies)
