The term Business Intelligence was originally first phrased by Richard Millar Devens from 1958. 

In 1989 Howard Dresner, later a Gartner Group analyst, popularized BI as an umbrella term to describe a set of concepts and methods to improve business decision-making.

Measurement
: this piece of the BI process gives managers the metrics to measure and evaluate business performance.

Analytics:
this is where the bulk of BI's processing, including data mining, modeling and statistical analysis occurs

Collaboration:
here data sharing and data interchange occurs; business segments work together to share knowledge and process the results of the BI output.
