Transcript of The Lousianna Purchase

- Thomas Jefferson
The United States doubles in size and the Louisiana Territory changes hands 3 times in as many years. http://www.google.com/imgres?q=louisiana+purchase Spain controlled the Louisiana Territory since the mid 1700s. Spain signs the Treaty of San Ildelfonso with Napoleon in 1800 giving France the Louisiana Territory. Jefferson fears a French colony next door and a potential war with Napoleon. Jefferson wants to quickly address French possession of New Orleans as well as provide safety for American citizens living in the Mississippi Valley, which was now French ground. http://timelines.com/1803/10/20/the-united-states-senate-ratifies-the-louisiana-purchase-treaty http://www.google.com/imgres?q=napoleon%27s+defeat+in+haiti Three factors prevented this and led to American control of Louisiana: Napoleon faced an embarassing defeat in Haiti where a slave army overthrew French control. He also faced national debt and realized war with England was inevitable. Napoleon decided to sell the Louisiana Territory to the United States and cut his losses. The entire territory was sold for $11 million as well as $3 million and change in canceled debt.
