Colonial history: paragraph 1
Connecticut began as 3 distinct settlements of puritans from Massachusetts and England; They combined under a single royal charter in 1663. Known as the "land of steady habits" for its political, social, and religious conservatism, the colony prospered from the trade and farming of its ethnic English, protestant population. The congregational and Unitarian churches became prominent here. Connecticut played an active role in american revolution and became a bastion of of the conservative, business-oriented, constitutionalism federalist party.

Originally known as the River colony, it was an English colony located in north America that became the US state of Connecticut. It was organized on March 3rd 1636 as a settlement for a puritan congregation. After early struggles with Dutch, the English had permanently gained control of the colony later in 1637. The colony was later the man of a bloody war between the English and Pequot indians, known as the Pequot war. The colony played a significant role in the establishment of self government in the new world.
Originally founded by Dutch in the 1630's. Thomas Hooker, a puritan minister, arrived in 1636 and delivered a powerful sermon.
Types of religion
The original colonies along the Connecticut river and in new haven were established by separatist puritans who were connected with the Massachusetts and Plymouth colonies. They held Calvinist religious beliefs similar to the English puritans, but they maintained that their congregations needed to be separated from the English state church. They had emigrated to New England during the great migration.
