To have a career in architecture, an option is to be an architect. Architects design structures of every type. It's their job to make sure that the building not only looks good, but that it is functional, meets the client's needs, and is structurally sound. This work requires both artistic talent and scientific and mathematical expertise.

Architects typically start by producing drawings or sketches for new buildings, or extensions/ alterations to existing buildings. Along with these designs, include fixed descriptions of the materials to be used in the construction, along with the crucial mechanical, electrical and structural specifications.

Once the designs have been approved, the architect usually helps coordinate the activities of the people going on the construction site, such as the electricians, engineers, plumbers, and interior designers. Throughout the design and building process, it is crucial that the architect works closely with the client and meets their budget.

Finally, since architecture is a business like any other, architects have to negotiate contracts with clients and contractors, bill people, keep financial accounts, and promote their businesses to attract new clients.

Architecture can also be a great advantage to travel because you get to be inspired by the different structures around the world.
Potential For Growth/ Promotions

Competition is expected, especially for positions at the most prestigious firms, and opportunities will be best for those architects who are able to distinguish themselves with their creativity.

Employments of architects is expected to increase by 16% by 2018 because current demographic trends will lead architects in more demand. Also the baby boomers that will be retiring and that the population of the world is increasing. There will be need for more health care faculties and retiring homes. Rising energy costs and increased concern about the environment has led to many new buildings being built green.

Usually architects are hired by architectural firms and building contractors,
but some work for government agencies and real estate companies.
Others are self-employed.

Architects usually work in an office where they work on computer-aided designs software to design buildings, bridges, and other structures. Other architects like to work old school on large drafting tables, using pencils, rulers, and etc, to create their design.

Most architects, especially interns work with contractors on construction sties, to make sure everything goes smooth.

Working hours for architects vary greatly. It all depends who your working for. Some who work in large firms work 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week; others might work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. It all depends on how much work an architect is given by the senior architects. Others who own their own firm can decide their own hours and how many hours their willing work.
