Transcript of Chemical Reactions

Chemical Reactions
What are chemical reactions?
Chemical reaction is a chemical change.
Classifying Reactions
Synthesis
Decomposition
Combustion
Single Replacement
Double Replacement
Chemical Change- Change that occurs when a substance changes, forming one or more new substances
In chemical changes, the matter is neither created nor destroyed.
THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS
Matter cannot be created or destroyed - only transformed
Energy in Reactions
Many forms of energy break the bonds of the molecule
With enough energy, atom's bonds can break.
Exothermic Reaction- gives off heat energy
Breaking Bonds
Forming Bonds
when new bonds are formed energy is released or absorbed
Endothermic reaction- the substance would freeze automatically, using energy from the surroundings.
Synthesis Reaction
synthesis reaction- two or more substances combine to make a new compound
Examples
Rust (iron plus oxygen forms iron oxide)
Magnesium plus oxygen forms magnesium oxide
Decomposition Reaction
Decomposition- compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances
.
Another Example-
Combustion Reaction
Where a substance rapidly combines with energy to form one or more new oxides
More information
Always a exothermic reaction
combustion doesn't work unless there is oxygen in the air

Single Replacment Reaction
What is a Single Replacment Reaction?
When a element or radical takes place of another one in a compound
General Form
AX+B
BX+A
One element appears to move into a compound, the other seems to move out
More information
Less reactive on switches with more reactive one
Also called single displacement reactions
Double Replacment
What is a Douvble Replacement Reaction?
when a gas, solid or molecular compound forms from an exchange of atoms or ions
Example
Lead chromate, which is lead nitrate and pootassium chromate
Usually acid-base reactions
ions appear to exchange between compounds
Another word- double displacement reaction

Where Are Chemical Reactions
Chemical Reactions are everywhere. That is why it is important to know all about them
