Cell Analogy Project by: Tara, Lexi, Josh, Arun, and Matthew The Nucleus It controls all the cell activities and houses the genetic material. The nucleus is like the Jedi Council in Star Wars, because they decide which Jedi go on which missions, and houses some of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy. Cell Membrane The cell membrane allows materials in and out of the cell. The shield on a hangar gate in Star Wars regulates what comes in the hangar and what goes out, just like a cell membrane. Cytoplasm The cytoplasm holds all organelles that are inside the cell in place. The galaxy also contains many things inside of it, such as stars and planets. Ribosomes Ribosomes, composed mostly of RNA, make proteins, which are very important to the cell. Jedi are like ribosomes, because Jedi make peace, while ribosomes make proteins, both of which are crucial to their specific environments. The Endoplasmic Reticulum transports proteins throughout the cell, and makes lipids, fats, and proteins. Endoplasmic Reticulum Starships are similar to the Endoplasmic Reticulum because they transport things like droid armies, clone squadron, and Jedi throughout the galaxy. The Golgi Body packages proteins inside the cell. Golgi Body The droids in Star Wars are like Golgi bodies when they package parts and when space droids package spaceship parts. Mitochondria Mitochondria provide energy for the cell by converting glucose and other nutrients into ATP, a usable form of energy. The Force provides energy and great powers to the Jedi and Sith from an unknown source. Cytoskeleton The cytoskeleton is a system of hollow tubes that provide support for the cell. The Jedi lightsabers are like the cytoskeleton in a cell. If the Force isn't working as well against their enemy as they had hoped, they pull out the lightsaber for support. Lysosomes Lysosomes break down nutrients, food, and waste inside the cell. Lightsabers are like lysosomes because they can break down materials such as droids, Sith, and Jedi. Vacuoles Vacuoles store liquids, foods, and enzymes for the cell. Carbonite is like a vacuole because it can store and imprison things for a large amount of time, like Han Solo. Cell Wall The cell wall provides support and protection to a plant cell. A droideka's forcefield is similar to a cell wall, in the way that it protects the droideka inside from blasters and lightsabers. Chlorophyll Chlorophyll provides energy to a plant cell through photosynthesis. Droid factories contain droids that make other droids, creating armies, the same way chlorophyll creates energy.
