Why is the First Amendment so Controversial?
Transcript of Why is the First Amendment so Controversial?
The first amendment is so controversial because it speaks about many different things that are important to people. It gives people the freedom of speech, press, religion and assembly.
Roger Ebart said, "I begin to feel like most Americans don't understand the First Amendment, don't understand the idea of freedom of speech, and don't understand that it's the responsibility of the citizen to speak out." This quote shows that people have very differing ways of understanding the First Amendment.
To understand the First Amendment, one must know why it is in place. It is in place because the people wanted a written document stating their rights. The First Amendment was added to the Constitution in 1791. It states that people have the rights of religion, speech, assembly, press, and petition. One of the most controversial parts of this amendment is free speech. The right to free speech allows people in the United States to say whatever they want without punishment. There is controversy over where free speech is acceptable. There is also controversy about people being offended by what people say about things. The First Amendment does not say anything about these controversies, it says that people can say what they want. This means that it is acceptable to say whatever a person wanted whenever they wanted.
The first amendment is so controversial because it speaks about many different things that are important to people. The rights given to people are simple, yet people struggle to figure out when and where they apply. This is the source of the controversy. This is one of the most important controversy in the United States.
