Transcript of Somebody that I used to know

Summary "Somebody that I used to know" by Gotye In this song we see the first person in a relationship, the man, recalls what happiness there was with the two together, in spite of the fact there was deficiencies on going.

There is a sadness that is referred to as love, that is suggested to be addicting. This is an addiction that keeps both in the relationship involved until the end. When it is determined there is no reconciling, an agreement to still be friends is stated, but seems as though that was easier said than done.

To say that being friends was easier said than done in this situation is putting it lightly, as the man feels as though he has been cut off by the woman, and he was nothing in the relationship.

The woman in the relationship suggests that she has been to blame thus far for all the man has done to hurt her all this time. Now she feels as though she is finished with the relationship, and it is time to end it for good. Therefore, it is her estimation that there was never anything in the relationship and that there is nothing that is being walked away from.

Finally, the man does feel it is OK to end this relationship. However, he reiterates that it did not need to be done in such an abrupt manner, again as though nothing ever took place in the relationship. Shift Poetic Devices Metaphor: "Like when you said you felt so happy you could die", from the first stanza Theme Even with love hurt can happen, but only to a point, and then the realization is it can only happen for so long before it is finished completely. Whether or not you want to be friends is not always the choice of both. Title The title itself, "Somebody I used to know", interprets a shared understanding of what is taking place through the duration of this relationship. There is frequent reference made to being "so lonely", and therefore the title of the song does suggest that both parties now see each other as 'Someone that they used to know'. Therefore they are more of acquaintances than being in a relationship together. [Gotye:]
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

[Kimbra:]
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

[Gotye:]

Somebody Although it is rare a song begins and ends the same with respect to the poetic experience, this song is the rare occurrence of this very thing. The song began with the man's recollections of how good the relationship had been before all became lonely and irreconcilable. Then, the song ends in the same manner, with the man still maintaining he was left out of the relationlship and made to feel so lonely.
