The Not-So-Secret Notebook of Expectations
Respect
Responsibility
Representation
Welcome & Congrats!
What do I do now?
Take an index card from the center of your table and fold the card
("hotdog way")
to make a “name tent”
Using markers provided, write your first name in
BIG, bold letters
in the center of one half. Then display your new name tent.
Just so you know...
Making Rules
Brainstorm with your group the answers to these questions. During your discussion, address each other by first names and be polite in your sharing - this is your first interaction as a collaborative group!

Elect a speaker to share your information with the class.

Some important reminders...
No phones. I don't care if it is new/old, shiny/ugly, "Smart"/dumb, yours/yo' mama's, on/off, "broke"/broken... you get the point.
Phone rule: if I see it or hear it, I take it.
On that note... the following devices are also prohibited: tablets, e-readers, laptops, USSR satellites, Nintendo 3DS or 2DS or Gameboy, DVD players, PS3s, any and all telegraph equipment, Stormtrooper Comms, transistor radios, etc.
Welcome.
Things to do...
Pick up groceries
Feed the fish
Feed the fish to the dog
Count to one thousand
Count to french fry
And ALWAYS be APPROPRIATELY prepared for class. Have pens and pencils every day but note that permanent markers are
not
an appropriate writing tool for most assignments.
Navigating social studies and finding success in 7th grade.
Conclusion
Have questions?
ASK!
It is important to bring your glasses to your classes... seriously. Always.
Throw away your trash at the end of an activity or class.
So... where ARE we?!?
When you arrive to class:
This is a trashcan. Not a basketball goal.
Rules? or Expectations?
Fun Fact!
Mr. Hostetter LOVES Apple Products
Be sure to listen to Mr. Hostetter when he is speaking...
... and to your peers when they are sharing/speaking...
... & ALWAYS listen to yourself: always check for kind, considerate words.
You're in the best social studies classroom in the county!
Make yours look like this!
Get
all
necessary materials ready to use.
Yours
: pen, pencil, paper, etc.
Mine
: items that belong to Mr. Hostetter (you may check the board for these items)
Begin work
immediately
.
Enter the classroom in a
QUIET
and
ORDERLY
fashion.
All About Mr. Hostetter
Yes, I am a member of social media sites. No, I will not send nor accept friend invites.
I am a big fan of the Harry Potter series.
...there are several copies of each book in my library!
READ ME!
You are here.
You are expected to know this.
No
assignment
posted?
Wait for instructions quietly.
HOW will be learning in here?
WHAT will we be learning in this class?

not so clean?
Tidy-up your work area!
I require coffee.
Why are RULES important? Should we have them in our classroom? Why should we have them?
INDIVIDUALLY - brainstorm 3 rules you think our classroom needs in order to ensure EVERYONE'S success this year.
As a GROUP - share your rules and describe what the classroom would look like and sound like when people were following these rules. Choose your group's "top 3 rules".
As a GROUP - choose one person at the table to read the 3 rules you came up with (it is OK if another table shares the same rule!).
Respect
Responsibility
Representation
- Be respectful of yourself and others.
- Be respectful of the school, classroom, and procedures therein.

* What does this look like?!
- Be responsible and prepared every day.
- Be responsible for your actions (and accept corresponding consequences).

* What does this look like?!
- Be the best possible version of yourself.
- Be ‐ at all times ‐ a positive representation of our school.

* What does this look like?!

NO LIQUIDS IN THE TRASHCAN
NO FOOD IN THE TRASHCAN
My Likes:
Harry Potter Series
(the books and some of the movies)
Social Studies (history)
(I LOVE early US history and studying the world we live in today)
By the way... can you tell time? Read a clock? Seriously... a REAL clock.
Quick activity... LET'S PRACTICE!
Dislikes
Terrible spelling and bad handwriting

All of that said, you ARE allowed to bring your own headphones for assignments on the computer.
However, you are NOT permitted to use these headphones during an assignment that does not call for them.
And you are NOT to listen to music online. It's that simple.
SO... what next?!
ALWAYS be prepared for class.
This includes having your notebook, pens, pencils, erasers, paper, and a novel.
It ALSO includes being mentally prepared - being READY to learn by getting homework done BEFORE coming to class & putting other business aside for the hour we spend together.
SPEAKING OF "LISTENING"...
Mr. Hostetter's Marker. DO NOT REMOVE!
Mr. Hostetter's Marker. DO NOT REMOVE!
Eat a french fry
Watch Nick Cage movies
Cry uncontrollably about low quality of Nick Cage movies
Beat Mortal Kombat for Sega
Sharpen pencils BEFORE beginning class. Have more than one writing tool... in case a pencil breaks, a pen explodes, or the bird from which you plucked your quill demands his feather be returned.
My Dog (Bailey)
He's a nine-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and enjoys licking his own nose.
WEAR ME!
SHOES SHOES SHOES!
(I am currently really into Nike)
Coffee
Simple.
Enough said.
Socks (to go with the shoes, of course)
I have a wonderfully interesting collection of socks. You'll likely see these throughout the year.
Absent?
Call a friend on the night of the absence and get a general idea of what you missed and what was assigned.
Still be in your seat at the bell.
Obtain permission (raise your hand) and WAIT to be called on.
Retrieve necessary materials (pencil, paper, etc.) from where they're housed”.
Kindly return borrowed materials before you leave my class.
If you say: "I NEED STUFF".
I will stand in front of the class with my hand raised.
Stop working immediately and raise your hand, too.
All eyes and ears are on me while I address the class.
Pay attention!
If I need your attention.
These are not mine. My collection is superior.

Room 707... in case you ever forget.
The question, "Do we have to use grammar?"
or... worse...
"Does we gots to use grammars?"

Not telling the (entire) truth. Always.

When things do NOT work as they should. (When things are "broken".)
Wasting time... yours or mine.
SERIOUSLY: You. are. not. Lebron.
