One ATC for 15 students,
teaching PE and Taping ankles.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The ATC is the most versatile medical professional working today. The ATC is your one stop shop for any type of athletic injury. Due to our various skills there are inherent downsides to the profession. Traditionally we are underpaid, our departments are underfunded and understaffed mostly because we never get any recognition and no one is really sure what we do. This generation of high school students is the first to be exposed to the ATC. They recognize the importance. Unless the older generation played at a high level college or professionally there is a misconception that I am not a medical professional and nothing more than a glorified water boy. This needs to change.

The Schedule
Certified Athletic Trainer Qualifications
Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) are highly skilled and educated health care professionals who work under the direction of physicians to provide health care for student athletes.

The Certified Athletic Trainer has an extensive background in human anatomy, human physiology, bio-mechanics and exercise physiology. In addition (s)he is trained in the recognition, rehabilitation, treatment, and management of athletic injuries, as well as nutritional and psychological counseling. Beyond this academic background, all Certified Athletic Trainers are required to participate in an extensive clinical internship under strict supervision.

A Certified Athletic Trainer also must go back to class and obtain 75 CEUs every three years to maintain the Certified Athletic Trainer credential.

Based on these qualifications, the Certified Athletic Trainer, other than a physician, is the most qualified individual to deal with athletic injuries on a daily basis.

On this day, we will have GVB, GXC and

GVB vs BIIF Championships
October
September
If FB is practicing for the BIIF Championship, I will be unable to accompany GVB while they are at the state tournament. I have numerous contacts and access on all Islands that will make things infinitely easier in the event of a serious injury. Most coaches are not educated nor trained to handle a true medical emergency. When you factor in, you are on a different island, you don't know where anything is, you don't have parents to take the student off your hands and you flat out don't know what to do, panic ensues causing additional damage to the student.

Prehab and Taping
I can only be in one place at a time and I can only help one person at a time. This Fall season, I am ultimately responsible for the health and safety of 128 Varsity and JV athletes on a daily basis.
Since 2007 I have invited Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) from UH-Manoa to work with our students, Free of charge! At the collegiate level the ATC and CSCS work together to reduce injuries and keep their athletes on the field and injury free. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Injury Prevention:
Helmet fitting. An improper fit is the number one reason for concussion. Remember "Neon"Deon Sanders playing without his helmet strapped up properly?
Chinstrap not attached.
No hip pads
No Knee pads
See if you can spot what is wrong with this helmet? Whomever approves of this as a proper fit is ripe for a lawsuit.
I personally fit all helmets for our FB team. There are very few ATC's who know how to fit a helmet properly, much less want to assume the incredible liability that comes with it.
NFL Player Safety?
Over 4500 former NFL players sued the NFL regarding concussions and settled for $765 million, worth roughly $170,000 per player.

Ankle Braces are loaned out free
of charge to all Varsity athletes playing Volleyball and Basketball. I would like to extend the same to our JV teams but my budget will not allow it. The ankle braces we use are top of the line and are the same ones that many high school and college institutions with unlimited resources use.

Injuries are the only thing that can stop schools like Texas from winning national championships. Why take any chances?
During a game, while I am evaluating an injury and determining if that player can return to the game. Who is monitoring the players on the field for concussions? What if there are two injuries? Two medical emergencies? Who is
This is just one game, and these situations happen every weekend. It is impossible for one ATC to provide the proper level of medical coverage during a football game. With Two ATC's one could manage this sideline injury while another watches the field for potential injuries. Take into account at this very moment, Varsity GVB. JV GVB, GXC and BXC are having their competitions also, who is taking care of our athletes?
