Compact Fluorescent Lamp
(CFL) What are they? They are a gas-discharge lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapor. The excited mercury atoms produce short-wave ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing visible light History The parent to the modern fluorescent lamp was invented in the late 1890s by Peter Cooper Hewitt. The Cooper Hewitt lamps were used for photographic studios and industries. Fluorescents were first introduced in 1939 at the World’s Fair in New York Money Savings Fluorescent bulbs are four to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. That's why you can buy a 15-watt fluorescent bulb that produces the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb. Disposal CFL's contain a small amount of mercury they cannot just be thrown in the trash. 34 states currently regulate the disposal of the bulbs so they should be taken to a recycling center or hazardous waste site, where they can be disposed of properly Earth Friendly If every American home replaced just one light with an CLF light, we would prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to the emissions of about 800,000 cars. Future of Lighting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are ideal for relay replacement applications where simple control applications such as building, HVAC, and parking lot lighting, and applications in which cost is a primary design issue.
