Start 5th grade with a bang!
A man and his son were in a car crash. The father died, but the son was critically injured and rushed to hospital.

They decided he needed surgery immediately. When he reached the operating table, the surgeon on duty looked at him and said ‘I can’t operate because it’s my son’.

Q's

Talent is an ability we have, which may range from our
creativity
or
intellect
or
social skills
to our
athletic abilities.
GROWTH
VS
FIXED
(the Psychology of Success)
A reporter asked Edison if he felt like a failure and whether he was ready to give up after Edison's 9,000 attempts to create a light bulb.

Perplexed, Edison replied, "Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will NOT WORK. Success is almost in my grasp." And shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb.
Franklin was very curious! He was not afraid to try new things! He knew that failure was a part of greatness! He failed over and over agian. Many would have felt he wasn't born a genius.

Today, you can thank Mr. Franklin after you go home and play a video game, get on your computer, or watch your television.

How Do You Goal Set?
My goal this year:
My goal is to help students improve comprehension
I will do this by teaching you strategies for comprehension
I will check myself by meeting with you regularily and giving you feedback
When Michael Jordan tried out for Varsity basketball in Highschool he didn't make the team.
How do you feel after you've poured a bowl of cereal?
How do you feel after cleaning your room?
How do you feel after completing a math problem that took you many tries?
You aren't just born to achieve- you must work VERY VERY hard to achieve.

How you feel about your 'natuaral ability' doesn't matter! Stop labeling yourself unless you label yourself a go getter, a tryer, a hardworker, a THINKER.

Think: Do you like to fail?

Turn and discuss with table groups:
Why is failure important?
What does failure mean?
TASK:
MINDSET {noun} a set of beliefs or a way of thinking that determines ones behaviour, outlook and mental attitude
How can this be?
BUT FIRST...
….
Einstein's teacher said that he was ‘academically subnormal’

He didn't start talking until he was 7!!
Dealing with failure

Makes you angry and depressed, and want to get even or give up, (TALENT / FIXED mindset)
Makes you want to learn from your mistakes (EFFORT / GROWTH mindset).
THE POWER OF
Conceive it, Believe it, Achieve it.
Goals act as a
blueprint
It's
plan
of
action
that can motivate us by giving us constant clear feedback of

where we are, what we’re aiming for and how to get there.

REFLECTION IS KEY!
BE THE CHANGE.
What do you think???
SETTING GOALS
You must have a
goal
Create a
plan
to reach that goal
Check in
on progress regularily!
Where am I improving?
Where do I still need to work?
Let's write a
goal for this year...
