Founded in 2005, Adam4Adam is a website that caters exclusively to gay men. It is a site that allows the user to seek many times of relations: dating, relationships, friendships or “hookups”. A user can search for a preferred companion by: ethnicity, location, age, height, weight, zodiac sign, HIV status, as well as other variegated physical and sexual characteristics. This site is not funded through membership, but through adult ads and prescription ads. It is considered one of the preeminent sites for gay men along with Manhunt.com and Gay.com.
METHODOLOGY
20 randomized samples
of gay men age
18 to 49
were drawn from each ethnic grouping utilizing the website, random.org from the following cities:
Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Oakland,
and
San Francisco
. The total sample number was
100
. Adam4Adam’s search engine was used to find eligible matches by self-identified ethnicity:
White, Black, Latino
and
Asian
. Bias was measured if racial preferences or exclusions were listed anywhere within the profile, otherwise a designation of “
no preference
” was assigned. The category “Other” was added for preferences not fitting into one of the other four ethnic categories. Overlap was permitted for those expressing multiple racial preferences.
LIMITATIONS
The criteria to be considered for the sample included:
Age 18-49
White, Black, Latino or Asian.
The person could not be identified as transgendered;
Could not be identified as multi-ethnic;
Could not be married;
Could not be listed as a sex worker;
Must have a picture,
Must have have listed “relationship” as an option on his profile.
* A profile that does not list racial preferences does not necessarily mean that bias does not exist, it simply means that it is not publicly advertised

SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS
Racial hierarchies resulting in racialized dating preferences. (2008 Feliciano, Robnett, Komaie)
High rates of self-preference among Asians and Latinos are an example of
Homogamy
in Dating.
Whites were the preferred racial option, which is not surprising because White men represent the dominant culture in the gay community (2005 McBride)
Why I hate Abercrombie & Fitch
Asian men are the least preferred overall group with high amounts of preference for themselves (cultural preservation) and White men (assimilation) (2000 Chow)

Rate it with love it, like it, neutral, dislike it, hate it
