"Neat people vs. Sloppy People" by: Suzanne Britt
Comparing Mernissi and Britt
Comparing Britt and Mernissi
"Size: 6 The Western Women's Harem" by: Fatema Mernissi
"I've finally figured out the difference between neat people and sloppy people" (Britt 233). The title Neat People vs. Sloppy People ties into the purpose of that essay because that is what the essay is about. The story compares how neat people and sloppy people are different.
Title and Purpose
Neat People vs. Sloppy People
Title and Purpose
Size 6: The Western Women's Harem
The title, Size 6: The Western Women's Harem, very much alludes to the purpose of the essay. The purpose of the essay is to compare the western women's standard of beauty to muslim women's lack of rights. "Unlike The title, Size 6: The Western Women's Harem, very much alludes to the purpose of the essay. The purpose of the essay is to compare the western women's standard of beauty to muslim women's lack of rights. "Unlike the Muslim man, who uses space to establish male domination by excluding women from the public arena, the Western man manipulates time and light" (Mernissi 255).
The titles of "Size: 6 The Western Women's Harem" and "Neat People vs. Sloppy People" do not tie into differently to their purposes. Both essay titles are very explicit. What the title says is what the story is about.
Thesis of Size 6: The Western Women's Harem
Western and eastern women are in their own harems controlled by men; because of men's standard of beauty.
Thesis of Neat People vs. Sloppy People
Neat people are incredibly wasteful and sloppy people keep everything.
Comparing Mernissi and Britt
Size 6: Western Women's Harem
Historical and personal evidence back up Mernissi's initial statement of women trapped in harems. She states historical evidence of Chinese women foot-binding "Chinese foot-binding worked the same way: Men declared beautiful only those women who had small, childlike feet” (Mernissi 255). She also uses her personal account of talking to a saleswoman in an American department store . “ ‘Size 4 and 6 are the norm,’ she went on, encouraged by my bewildered look. ‘Deviant sizes such as the one you need can be bought in special stores.’ ” (Mernissi 253). “Her words sounded so simple, but the threat they implied was so cruel that I realized for the first time that maybe “size 6” is a more violent restriction imposed on women than is the Muslim veil” (Mernissi 254).
This evidence supports her thesis, western and eastern women are in their own harems controlled by men, because it gives examples of women trapped in man made harems. The reader should accept her evidence because it is factual, although a little feminist.
Neat People vs. Sloppy People
Britt does not use evidence, she just uses her personal beliefs to back her thesis, neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people . "Sloppy people live in Never-Never Land” (Britt 233). “Neat people cut a clean swath through the organic as well as the inorganic world" (Britt 235). These quotes are just her opinions; Britt does not relate her ideas to any real accounts or experiences. Britt's readers do not have to accept what she has written because it is poorly supported by evidence.
Evidence
Evidence
The evidence in Mernissi's essay is more effective, because of her historical evidence and personal account. They make her thesis more valid versus Britt's essay which lacks evidence to support her thesis.
Based on organization, Mernissi’s point by point structure is more effective. Mernissi's structure makes her essays easy to follow and read. Britt’s structure is subject by subject and it makes her essay long and hard to keep up with. Britt’s story also lacks transitions which bring down her essay’s quality.
Organization
Size 6: The Western Women's Harem
Size 6: The Western Women's Harem uses the writing structure point by point. After Mernissi describes a point about American “beauty” she compares it to Muslim culture. " 'Size 4 and 6 are the Norm' " (Mernissi 253). "I come from a country where there is no size for women's clothes" (Mernissi 254).
Organization
Neat People vs. Sloppy People
The type of organization used in Neat People vs. Sloppy People is subject by subject. The first half of Britt's essay describes sloppy people and each paragraph begins a new topic about sloppy people. "Sloppy people can't bear to part with anything" (Britt 234). "For all these noble reasons and more, sloppy people never get neat" (Britt 234).
Neat People vs. Sloppy People is still relevant today because there are still neat people and sloppy people out there. Size 6 is also relevant today because western women are still trapped in harems.
Neat People vs. Sloppy and Size 6: The Western Women's Harem are both relevant; however Britt's story lacks importance. There are sloppy and neat people out there and there always will be., bu does it matter that those people are different? Mernissi's story compares two things that are meaningful. Comparing women's rights in different cultures is more important than comparing what a neat person would do with a messy desk versus what a sloppy person does with that desk. "Four hours or two weeks into the excavation, the desk looks exactly the same, primarily because the sloppy person is meticulously creating new piles of papers with new headings and scrupulously stopping to read all the old book catalogs before he throws them away. A neat person would just bulldoze the desk" (Britt 234).

Relevance
Feedback
Size 6: The Western Women's Harem was more effective and influential than Neat People vs. Sloppy People. Size 6 was well written and in a narrative format that made it easy to follow. Size 6 used historical evidence and her personal account which really helped push her thesis. Mernissi essay was very interesting and different.
