Transcript of Are you really sure that's what you want to do?

Are you really sure that's what you want to do? Techniques to refine career choice
Career Choice
Most important decision students make
Often made on random and/or highly incomplete knowledge
Many of our students don't shoot high enough
Many of our older students have forgotten what they really wanted to do
Mentor Strategies
Forgot what they really wanted to do
What did you want to be when you were 10?
How much did you want it?
How long did you feel that way?
Why did you stop?
Lack of knowledge of existence of field?
Undershooting: why dental hygienist rather than dentist?
All they were told they could be?
Money and time? But make sure these are "real" considerations (scholarships, career swtich, etc.)
Focus 2
Many of these issues can be resolved with a high-quality career placement exam
CCC has access to Focus 2
http://www.ccc.edu
My route: search <Focus 2 Olive-Harvey>
My particular usage is to:
Have students take all 5 assessments
Spend special time on jobs that come up in >1 assessment & "Bright Futures"
Use this a a tool to show students:
Jobs they didn't know existed
Remind them of jobs they forgot they wanted to do

After all this:
Search recently published, highly rated specialized job/career books on amazon
Delivered direct to student
Cost well worth increased effectiveness and appropriateness vs. older library or non-specialized books
Mentee HW is to read and report on these books
