What is Zoomorphism?
Transcript of What is Zoomorphism?
Zoomorphism is a major part of The Life of Pi and is discussed many times throughout the book as shown in this quote:
"There are many examples of animals coming to surprising living arrangements. All are instances of that animal equivalent of... zoomorphism, where an animal takes a human being or another animal, to be one of its kind." (1.32.1)
What does it mean?
An example if zoomorphism would be an animal like a mouse living with a snake or a gazelle living with a lion.
In these examples an animal is accepting a member of another species as one of its own.
What Does it Mean?
An example of Anthropomorphism is Mickey Mouse. He acts like a human and has human qualities and emotions.
Another example is when you're talking about your dog and you say the dog is jealous of the attention that you give to someone else.
Example in Life of Pi
An example of Zoomorphism from the book is when Pi and Richard Parker, (the tiger), are living together on the boat.
What is Zoomorphism?
Zoomorphism is when animals treat another species like their own.
What is Anthropomorphism?
Anthropomorphism is the process of applying human qualities to inhuman creatures, typically to make them more relatable.
How Does it Relate to Life Of Pi?
In the book, Pi gives each of the animals human traits based on the people he lost in the shipwreck.
An example of anthropomorphism in the book is how Orange Juice, a female orangutan, is somewhat representing Pi's mother.
Pi's mother, Gita, is an overall kind person who strongly believes in humanity. Gita confronts the cook, criticizes him for cutting the young soldiers leg off for food and dies for her act.
Orange Juice fearlessly attacks the hyena for hurting the zebra and ends up dying for her efforts.
In Pi's mind, he has given the orangutan the human characteristics he associated with his mother.
Example from Life Of Pi
So in conclusion, Anthropomorphism is the process of applying human qualities to inhuman creatures and Zoomorphism is when animals treat another species like their own.
