What is hyperlocal?

Nobody can really agree on an exact definition. And lots of people don't much like the word 'hyperlocal' either.
But, in general,
is a form of media covering an area smaller than those served by traditional outlets like newspapers and radio stations. It's usually online.
I'd argue they exist for three main reasons.
1. Local newspapers and radio stations have faced hard times, leading to fewer staff and making them less local.
2. It's now easy to set up a website and start publishing. Or you could use a Facebook page or Twitter feed, or anything else you fancy.
3. More information than ever about local issues is now freely available to anyone online.
There are more than 400 active hyperlocal websites in the UK (Harte 2013). Plus lots more sites and social media feeds that include information we could define as hyperlocal, too.
Attempts by mainstream media to go hyperlocal have often failed to survive, despite some good work.
My personal view is that making significant money from hyperlocal is going to remain extremely difficult, and independent sites will come and go while the best survive.
Hyperlocal is no longer the next big thing in the media, but it is here to stay.
