Barbie dolls were very, very popular when they first came out. children loved them then and still love them up to this very day! I am pretty sure that all of us girls played with barbie dolls when we were young!
Barbie is really old. The first doll was actually created in 1959. They made many commercials for barbie dolls back then and when people watched the commercial it was a great commercial. But now it just seems strange.
We put some clips down below that we will watch right now!

If you look,

Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara play with little paper dolls, and she noticed her daughter loved giving the dolls adult roles
. At that time children dolls were mostly just dolls that were infants, so Ruth suggested an idea to her husband Elliot of creating a doll that is an adult-bodied doll. Her husband Elliot was a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. Elliot was very unenthusiastic about the idea and so was Mattel.

During a trip to Europe with her 2 children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth noticed a doll in the window. The doll in the window was called Bild Lilli. Bild Lilli was a doll created based on a character in a european comic.
The Bild Lilli doll was exactly like what Ruth had in mind so she purchased 3 and took them to Mattel. When she was back in the US, she re-worked the design of the doll a bit and gave the doll the name Barbie after her daughter. The doll made its first debut in New York on March 9th 1959.
