Transcript of Tools for EA: Modelling or Analysis?

Do You Use Enterprise Architecture Tools? "Today at Winterthur, all IT activities are judged according to how well they support the business strategy. Pure modeling is not enough – Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) is what’s needed."
Christoph Gall Head of IT Strategy & Architecture
AXA Winterthur What is Modelling? What is Analysis? Enterprise modelling is the abstract representation, description and definition of the structure, processes, information and resources of an identifiable business, government body, or other large organization.
It deals with the process of understanding an enterprise business and improving its performance through creation of enterprise models. This includes the modelling of the relevant business domain (usually relatively stable), business processes (usually more volatile), and Information technology. Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. The technique has been applied in the study of mathematics and logic since before Aristotle, though analysis as a formal concept is a relatively recent development. What Types of Analysis in EA do You know? Structural Gap Impact Redundancy (functionality, data) Quantitatitve (e.g. cost) Qualitative (e.g. availability) How Do We Communicate
The Results?
From Single EA Repository? Views Augmented views Reports Interactive Reports Online Monitoring Who is Using EA Tool For Modelling Only? Who Is Using EA Tool for Analysis Only? For Both Modelling And Analysis? Which Capability Do We Need in ADM? So Why Modelling? Modelling - The only way to capture tacit knowledge! Knowledge about structure, behaviour and properties of EA elements.
However as far architecture development iteration moves as more analysis is needed. EA Tools should provide YOU both modelling and analysis capabilities. So What Is Next? Predictive analysis based on discrete modelling, agent based modelling and system dynamics.
