Literacy Memories
Hello Everyone, my name is Tina Powell. I am an ECU Alumni. This semester I am completing my Senior 1 Internship. I am a Co-Sunday School Teacher at my church...I love God and I love spreading the Gospel. My students are awesome! I love Biblical literature. I spend a lot of time with my family...we all love the beach. For me, nature and being outdoors helps me to relax. I enjoyed the entire Twilight series...I have all the books and movies.
I started reading books before I started Kindergarten. I have very fond memories of beginning to read. My mother bought me a set of children's books for beginning readers. My parents would read to me at night, before everyone got settled in for bedtime. I would turn the pages and look at the pictures. When I read alone, I would use the pictures and try to remember the words my parents used when they read to me. My grandmother would read the local newspaper and give me and my siblings, as we called them, the "funny papers". My mom taught me the ABCs and 123s. I began to put letters together and sound out words that my mom showed me on flashcards, like cat, walk, and milk. I would ask for help if I didn't know the word. My mom would put her finger on the first letter of the word and she would began slowly sounding out the word. I would try by joining in and sounding out the word.
In the Kindergarten, First, and Second grade, I remember there being a train of the Alphabet on the wall in the classroom. Each week or so the class focused on a letter. For example, when focusing on the letter "F", the teacher would show us the letter with a picture that begins with the letter, such as a fox. We were taught how to pronoun the letter, how to write the letter, and we colored pictures of "F" words. We would also read a very short story about a fox. Every student pair with a partner and we were to take turns reading the story aloud. The teacher would review by asking the class to name some things that began with the letter. This was a positive experience for me because it exposed me to more words.
Donna Bell, the author of Letting Go of "Letter of the Week, stated in the article that she had four primary objectives for her participation in the Reading Initiative, reassuring the Kindergartens that they were already readers, having the students make sense of what they read, using whole-literacy approaches as a pose to just sounding out words, and helping the students use graphophonemics. I can say that all of these objectives were present in my beginning literacy experiences with my parents and grandparents. Also, the author mentioned that the "Letter of the Week" strategy was not an effective technique to helping children understand letter-sound relationships. This was something that I experienced in my Kindergarten classroom. The authors suggested trying something new and effective such as giving the students a buddy to read with them. The other assigned article for reading, "Characteristics of exemplary first-grade literacy instruction", acknowledged that a positive reading environment contributed to motivating children to learn.
The literacy experiences that I've had were very positive for me. I plan to use in my classroom some of the strategies my parents and teachers used for me when I was younger. Some of those strategies include creating an inviting reading environment in the classroom. Inviting, in my opinion, means that the students feel relaxed exploring the books. My room and the living room couch were inviting for me. Also, I plan to create a colorful classroom library filled with different genres and different types of print for the students. When I was a child, my mom taught me how to read a book correctly, meaning, she taught me to read the cover, use my fingers to read, and to read from left to right and up and down. I know that all the students will probably have different reading experiences and my experiences my be different from their experiences so I plan to use techniques I've used and know to be evidence-based and effective.
